It is no wonder that Artarii Sagicus, Royal Huntsman of Romanica, would want to marry Destra Orenis. Not only is the Destra the greatest archer in the seven elven princedoms and beyond, she is possibly the fairest maiden in all of Atore. Somewhere in Destra's ancestry is a human, and that human ancestry softens her elven features and blends elven and human traits so that her face and form are worshipped by all. Her fair skin, violet eyes, long lustrous hair so dark it is almost blue, her firm, ample bosom, her sleek limbs...everything about her fascinates the eye that spies her. Even dwarven fletchers vie for the honor of having one of their arrows notched in her bow.
The idea of being married to Artarii Sagicus absolutely disgusts Destra. He is handsome enough, she supposes, and he is a more than an adequate archer and a hunter for a human. Even by elven standards, Artarii would be considered exemplary. But it is that condescending, loud, boisterous human way of his that repels Destra.
So under normal circumstances, there was no way that Destra would make a wager that could end with her marrying a bore like Artarii. Destra loved her lifestyle too much. She planned to keep her virginity intact until the grave.
But then Artarii offered the only thing that could tempt Destra to enter such a wager: the famed Sagicus Bow.
Some time in hallowed antiquity, dwarves crafted the Sagicus bow for a distant ancestor of Artarii's. Since then, the bow had been passed down from eldest son to eldest son, with each generation of Sagicus bestowing a small part of its skill into the bow. It was said that, if the bow was in accomplished hands, and if the eye could spot its mark, the bow could strike it.
When it came to archery, Destra had the sharpest eye and most accomplished hands in Atore. Possibly beyond. She wanted that bow in her hands.
So Destra accepted the terms of Artarii's wager. The two archers would compete in seven different contests, with the archer who fared best being declared the winner. In addition, each archer would surrender their favorite bow for the duration of the contest. Destra smiled when she thought about that condition. Destra was sure she could defeat Artarii, even with him using the Sagicus bow. WIthout the Sagicus bow in his hands, Destra was certain Artarii would lose.
Destra and Artarii met at one of the royal hunting lodges of Romanica, with both human and elven nobles gathered to watch. Even the human crown prince was in attendance, The first contest required the contestants
