Since James was probably too far for him to reach in time, Derek decided to try to get the help of one of the two kids on the ground. While he was closer to Adric, he was very far away from his head and traveling across his entire body would be extremely hard. The other two were in a much better position. After thinking about it, he figured that Tyson would be his best option. Tyson was laying right next to the couch, and if Derek jumped off from the spot he was currently standing on, there was a good chance that he would land near the boy's head.
Of course, it was possible that Tyson would move the second he jumped, but if he just stood there thinking about it, the chance of that happening would increase. So, Derek ran across the huge field that was a section of the couch cushion until he reached the edge and immediately jumped off.
