Billy tried to say something to John but let out a scream when he saw a huge creature behind him.
"Get back!" John said, holding out his walking stick in defense.
Billy made a mad dash for the stump where the woodcutting axe was kept. Because he was so small, he came to the action very slowly. The bear had made a huge gash on John's torso. Billy helped the poor buck to his feet. As John had hobbled back to Robert, Julia had come out to Billy.
"Billy! You put that axe back!" She ordered.
"Sorry, Mom," Billy said. "I was just -"
"None of your excuses!" Julia interrupted.
She took Billy back to the house and closed the kitchen door.
"Play with soft things," she told her son. "Like this."
As she held out a teddy bear, Billy ran for his life, screaming at the top of his lungs. He rushed to his room and slammed the door behind him.
"Billy, stop this foolishness," Julia called from behind the door.
"No!" Billy snapped.
"No, you won't stop?" Julia asked.
"No!"
"No, what?"
"No!"
Billy blocked the door as much as he could.
At supper, the family read the news about the bear attack that was recently released on social media. Billy was never more ashamed as he was at this moment.
"Billy, why didn't you tell me about this?" Julia said, hugging her tiny son.
"You wouldn't let me," Billy said with tears in his eyes.
