Chapter #3

First Test

Cody woke to his neighbors pounding on the wall to his alarm clock. Checking it, his eyes shot wide. "Damn! Late on my first day!" He turned on the weather report as he rushed to brush his teeth and get dressed, no time to eat breakfast. The weather woman told that today would be slightly cloudy but would be mostly hot and sunny all week with no chance of rain at all. Sighing in relief, he turned his TV off and rushed out the down in his purple t-shirt that highlighted his pecs and jeans that were just short of form fitting.
Almost immediately, something seemed off. There had been sun coming in the one window in his apartment when he left but now there was no sign of the sun through the thickening clouds. It felt unnatural. He was going to run back to his apartment to get his umbrella, but before he could turn around, a strong wind whipped up. And he was already running late.
Wrapping his arms around himself in case it did start to rain, he headed for the restaurant. It was strange but the weather almost seemed to be responding to him alone. The wind intensified as he got closer but whenever someone came into into view, it would suddenly die down until they disappeared. And then the rain kicked in.
About halfway to the restaurant, the first drips fell. Cody groaned as he they landed on his cheeks. Speeding up, the weather responded. The wind and rain intensified. But again, whenever someone came into view, it would suddenly die down. It was a full fledged downpour by the time he got to Atlas's Weight and he was bending over to fight to get even a few steps towards the door. He almost didn't see the restaurant until he was right at the door. Fighting against the wind, he pulled open one of the doors and stepped inside. Immediately, the weather stopped. Cody looked outside to see breaks in the clouds that were barely moving unlike a minute ago when it was practically a typhoon. Even the ground was dry now. "What the hell?"
"What's wrong newbie?" Cody turned around to see the buff host that was there yesterday. "Uh, you're late and Mr. Atlus isn't going to like you dripping on his carpet." Cody glanced down to see himself dripping all over the floor creating a puddle.
"Sorry. Can't really help since it was downpouring out there."
"The TV said there wasn't going to be any rain this week." He said without missing a beat.
Cody raised any eyebrow. "I know. I saw the weather report as well. But the strangest thing is that the weather stopped the moment I entered the restaurant. It wasn't natural."
The stepped from behind the podium. "Anyways, I'll take you to the locker room and you can get yourself dried off while I let Mr. Atlus know you're finally here. Oh, and by the way, I'm Ajax." He guided Cody through the dining area, past the buffet line and into the kitchen to a back room where another door opened into the locker room. Cody threw him a towel and a spare set of clothes as he shut the door behind him.

Ajax knocked on the office door. "Come in Ajax."
"Thought you'd want to know that our new recruit is finally here."
         "And?" Atlus asked him.
Ajax stepped in, shutting the door behind him and furrowing his brow. "And what sir? I'm not sure what you're asking?"
"What condition was he in? Was he dry, soaked, tired, sunburned, or did he look perfectly normal?"
"Um, he came in completely soaked, talking about the weather being bad but I played it off since it's not rainy in this world this week. Why? Did you do this?"
Atlus waved his hand in the wave creating ripples that distorted it and made it look like multiple hands were doing it. "Just a little test to see if he was up for this in the long run. If he was truly special, then that split in the Wall would manifest and he'd get the weather from the other world. If he was just a normal person, he'd only experience this world's weather."
"Pardon me asking sir, but don't you usually only do tests like that closer to the end of their month?"
"I had to see if I was right about him. And I am. He's special. Make sure he gets thorough training as I have no doubt that if he makes it through the trial month, then he will be VERY popular." Atlus waved again, dispelling the rift he'd created and then waved Ajax away. "You're dismissed."
"Very well, Sir. I'll let everyone know."
"Yes. Let them know that they are to train him to the fullest of their ability but not to go overboard. We do not want him to be scared away. Especially Zanthard. Remind that fool of a janitor that if he messes this one up, that is it. Magisterial connections or not, he will be out of a job."
Ajax nodded and backed out the door.
Atlus turned to the window behind his desk that overlooked a snow covered mountain. "So, a human that can interact with other worlds. I haven't seen one of them in centuries. This will be fun."
