There was a necklace I saw online that I thought Megan would like, so I head to the department store to see if I can find it. Obviously, I would have to look for something to give Maddie, but I'm not sure what yet. I weave my way through the sea of people. I hardly ever come to the mall because I can't stand the crowds. Also, I prefer online shopping when I am looking for something for myself.
Luckily the department store is less hectic, and I can get to the jewelry section without bumping into half a dozen people. A girl about my age with hair dyed purple is behind the counter. "How are you doing?" she asks with a smile.
"Pretty good," I respond automatically, not liking small talk.
"Is there any I can help you find?" she asks. I hesitate, feeling awkward asking, but end up describing the necklace. "We got a couple of those in different colors over there," she points to a turn-style display. Out of the comer of my eye, I notice her name tag says Alice. "Is this for someone special?"
"Umm….No…Just a friend," I feel my cheeks go a little red.
"Some friend. I wish I were the lucky girl," she says slightly flirtatiously, which makes me go even redder. As I go over to look at the different options, another customer walks up to the counter, and Alice goes to help them. I turn the display until I find one that is a deep green, Megan's favorite color. I pick it up to look at the price. It is a little outrageous, but I still want to consider it. I reach into my pocket for my phone to take a picture so I can compare it to other options. Instead, I pull out the shrink ray, accidentally pushing the button. I try an turn the ray from me, but it is too late. The beam hits me. The device slips out of my hand and slides behind the display. Instantly I become tingly, and the mall around me grows.
When I finally stop shrinking, everything looks completely different. The display case extends up like a skyscraper. On the floor in front of me lies the necklace, which looks like a massive snake now. Based on the size of everything around me, I would guess that I am an inch or less tall. In the distance, I see to massive sneakers go by, crushing a discarded cracker in the process. I need to get back to normal size. The trouble is that at this size, there is probably no way for me to operate the device. Before I can think of wat to do a shadow looms over me. I look-up and see…
