"Wha-what?" Melona said, still catching her breath. She looked towards the desks and saw they were all empty.
"Class is cancelled today, remember? To give you more time to complete your project," Skullus said.
"The project? Oh, right. I remember." The project in question was to revive a dead animal into a zombie. It was technically the simplest spell for a necromancer to do, but it was still very difficult for those inexperienced in the craft. And the problem was: Melona was both inexperienced and had no magic talent. Skullus gave her a dead mouse to revive, but no matter how many rituals, spells, or anything she tried, she couldn't get it to even twitch. It didn't help her confidence that she saw other students in her class have already revived their own dead pets or other animals they found. The due date to turn in a revived animal was only two days away, and Melona was hoping that today's lecture might include any last clue to help her. But the only info she learned was she skipped breakfast and ran across the academy for nothing. "Sorry for intruding," Melona said, depressed. "I'll go now."
"Wait, Melona," Skullus said, "You're usually so dedicated in class, it's strange to see you so unfocused. Come over and sit with me, let's talk about what's bothering you." She sat down and gestured to a desk next to her.
"I-It's okay professor. You don't need to-"
"Melona, I have an hour and a half open in my schedule today. There's nothing I would rather spend it than helping one of my most hard working students."
Despite being a cold-blooded undead lich, Skullus was the kindest professor Melona had currently, which she greatly appreciated. It was a nice reprieve from the other professors who saw her lack of magic ability and dismissed her as another failed student. Melona approached Skullus and said...
