Melona hated shopping at Archmage Candi's Fashion Boutique. The displayed clothes were too tight, too gaudy, and generally intended for people with curves better than her own. But, she had to admit, it had the best selection if one knew where to look. Besides, the only other place that sold nice clothes within a 2-block radius of campus was Melina's, her mother's pet vanity project.
It wasn't as though she wanted to go shopping, she told herself. She was here because in a couple of weeks there would be a student gala, and maybe, just maybe, Millicent Rose Briar would be there. She needed to look her best if she wanted to impress. That was why she was here, no other reason.
Melona ducked past a couple of far-too-cheerful employees looking to hawk clothes that would make her look ridiculous or beauty products that wouldn't work as they claimed. She had been around her mother enough to know that anything worth having wasn't gonna be proudly displayed or actively sold. That was just the stuff they could mark up. No, the real magic was gonna be in deepest, least-cared-for recesses of the store. The stuff that was too poorly-conceived to even go on the clearance rack, but was inconsequential enough to not be worth disposing of, that was what she was looking for.
At Candi's, that was at the back of the store, behind a dressing room, a turn to the left, and straight on until one reached a corner that looked like it was in a completely different establishment entirely. Melona breathed a sigh of relief as she looked at the harsh lighting and scuffed floors. Here, she would find what she needed. Here, she'd be able to buy the thing that would let her win over Millie and live out her wildest dreams.
Unbeknownst to Melona, these hopes were somewhat well-founded, but not in a way that she could have anticipated.
