Telling My Friends

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
Getting my friends over was no big deal. I just called Heather and the girls, and invited them over. The plan was for me to wait in my room until they were all here; in the meantime, I spent my time trying to get used to my new 'do. After all, if Dad was right, I was going to look like this for the rest of my life.

Finally, Mom came up and told me everyone was waiting. "Heather was first," she said. "After that, it was Barbara Gerstle; then, Elsa Hudson. I think you'll feel better when you see Barbara." Taking a deep breath, I walked down the stairs and into the family room.

Naturally, the first thing anyone noticed was my hair. After the initial shock, they squealed, and came up for a closer look. From here, I could see that Barbara was wearing a wig.

"That's an interesting style," Heather said. "I wish you would have told me; I would have loved to be there with you. Especially for the dye job. Where did you get it done?"

"It was right here," I replied. "And it's not dye; this is my natural hair color and style now."

"What?" she asked. "Come on, girlfriend; gimme the real story."

"I think she is," Barbara said.

"But how could that happen?"

"I'm taking after my dad," I explained. "I've always known I was going to be a scientist; now, I know I'm going to be a mad scientist."

"What's that got to do with your hair?"

"That's how it works out for mad scientists sometimes," Barbara explained. "Sometimes, it's different."

Before any of us could ask what she meant, she took off her wig, revealing that she was now completely bald.

"Your dad's a mad scientist, too?" I asked.

"Yeppers. I found one of his notebooks; the more I read, the more my hair fell out. Funny; my dad is one of the mads who got to keep a regular hairstyle."

"So's mine," Elsa said. "And, before you ask, I'm not a mad scientist; just a garden variety academic."

"There's no shame in that," I replied. "My mom makes discoveries in astrophysics, without tossing out an evil laugh."

"Maybe you can assist us," Barbara said.

"Nothing doing," Elsa said. "I quit assisting my dad years ago, when one of his experiments had an unexpected side effect."

"What kind of side effect?"

"My name used to be Eldon; and I used to be a boy."

All in all, finding out my destiny was in mad science was turning out well.
