In a Strange Place

He grabbed a bag of chips and went into the living room, where he sat down and turned on the TV. Gary was watching him eat, which annoyed him. Jake held out a chip and pretended to give it to him before snatching it back and eating it slowly, mocking him. Gary let out a growl and then barked. Jake laughed before suddenly feeling drowsy. He fell asleep, and when he awoke, he found himself in a white void devoid of everything but his couch.

Even worse, Gary was there.

"What the hell?" Jake exclaimed.

"Hell...ah, yes. Your negative afterlife. Quite fascinating," a voice said.

"Who is there?"

"I apologize for the inconvenience. I am a...how can I explain it...scientist? explorer?"

"And where the fuck am I?" Jake insisted, looking around for the source of the voice and seeing nothing...well, except an equally confused Gary, who was looking around for anything.

"There is no need for anger. I have removed you from your reality...into this pocket dimension. When I restore you and your companion to your reality, no time will have passed. I just simply have some questions."

"Where are you?"

"Ah..physical form....sorry...you would prefer that." Suddenly, a shadowy bipedal form was standing in front of him, but it was impossible to see any features... "This is more like a placeholder...for your comfort." The being turned his attention to Gary. "Your companion seems to be rather upset," he told the dog.

"Why are you talking to him? He's just a dumb animal." Jake asked.

"Interesting. I have observed you...the others in your dwelling are fond of this one...but you are not. So...you are not rival members of the same family unit?"

"No. He's a pet."

"Ah...slavery."

"No...he's not a person..."

"Sounds like slavery to me...but after so many realities, one does get confused. It is some sort of symbiotic relationship?" Gary barked at him. "Oh..." the voice said, as if he understood that as an answer.

"Yeah, yeah...whatever. Can you send me home please?" Jake was not the sort to be interested in this. Some people would be phased by an interdimensional being...Jake just wanted to go home.

"I shall have to study more of this...if you do not mind."

"You mean...watch us some more? I really would like to go home...But maybe you could keep the dog...study him for a while." Jake asked, hopefully.

"I think he prefers something more like your world as well," the voice said. Gary barked. "Yes...I understand," the voice told the dog. "Well, thank you for visiting...I will not trouble you again...perhaps another reality will be more...interested in discovery. There are so many, you understand...and some are so similar...it is hard to keep track of them..."

"Yeah, have a nice trip. Stop by sometime..."
