Josh pulled a box out of his backpack and noticed that it had some hefty weight to it. He certainly didn't notice it before when he placed the box into his backpack, but he probably wasn't thinking of the weight or anything. "I found this under a bush when I ran into that odd lady. She must have forgot it and ran off before I cold give it to her." He placed it on the table with Jenn but found it to give a small thunk when he let go.
Seeing the decent size box that looked the size of a college textbook, Jenn put down her latte and started to open it up. Seeing what she was about to do, Josh quickly took the box and brought it close to him so that she couldn't get to it. "Hey." She said with a giggle, hoping that her boyfriend wouldn't have seen her. "So I hope your Geography exam went well. I know Dr. Reynolds likes to recycle his notes and exams, so it almost feels like cheating when I was helping you study."
Playing with the edge of the box, Josh started to take a better look at it. The box itself seemed to be ordinary enough having a dark gray color with no assuming marks. A kind of box that would be sent by a manufacturer for storing collector's items. Just looking at it was enticing him to open it. It took almost every fiber of his being to maintain control and ignore it. "Umm... Yeah. I was actually thinking about finally announcing a major."
Surprised at what her boyfriend had finally thought about what he wanted to major in. Even though she already knew what she wanted to major in when she started and didn't need to change many of her classes, but she was glad that he finally knew what he wanted to do spend his life with. "So." She replied with interest as she put her hands under her chin. "What did you decide on?"
Leaving the box alone for the moment, Josh let out a big sigh. "I was thinking about Secondary Education. Probably Science or History since I like them both." Jenn's face started to smile even more broadly. "What?" He asked as he felt his smile growing too.
Waving her hands around like nothing was wrong. "Oh, its nothing." She started as she took a small sip of her latte. "When you said that, it made me think of Mr. Jackson back at High School." He was the type of teacher that would dress up in period clothing at the start of a new section. Both Jenn and Josh loved him as a teacher and each time that he did this and would stay in character the entire day. He felt that it would help immerse the children into the time period and it showed in the grades of his students. Each year, the classes showed a drastic improvement from the other history classes. It was no surprise that he won the Teacher of the Year award multiple times.
"You know what? I think that might be one of the reasons why I want to do this." He chuckled. Sitting there in the silence, Josh looked around and noticed that it was mostly empty except for a small group of older women waiting to pick up their kids from school or having a book club meeting. He really didn't care. Taking a sip of his coffee, but the lid popped off causing the contents to spill on the table. "God damn it." He swore as he quickly moved the box out of the way, but caused it crashing to the floor. As it did, the box fell upside down. Josh quickly cleaned up his mess and went to grab the box, but as he lifted it up, the contents fell out to reveal a large brown book that looked to be leather with what looked to be yellowed pages encased inside.
With the help of Jenn, the coffee spill was quickly remedied and Jenn quickly pounced on the book that fell onto the floor. Ever since Josh had known her, Jenn had been the type of person that would devour books and it almost never satiated her hunger. Lifting it up seemed to take great effort, almost as if the book itself was fused to the floor. But after a few tugs, the book had freed itself and Jenn seemed to lift it without a problem. "Wow, I don't know why it was stuck to the floor, but whatever." She replied with a smile as she started to look at the outside of the book to see there was anything that would cause it to stick but found the outside to be blemish free.
As she set the book on the newly cleaned table, Jenn opened the book to see what kind of secrets were contained inside. The book opened without any fanfare or dramatic effect, but with a soft crackle that usually accompanies the opening of a new book. Jenn looked it over for a moment to see if she could garner the contents of the book. She flipped through the pages at a feverish pace as if she was looking for something in particular. "I can't read any of this." She declared with a huff, while she glanced up to meet Josh's gaze. "The writing is in Cyrillic." Josh looked at her questioningly as if she was trying to coax the answer out of her. Letting out an exasperated sigh, she stated. "The Russian alphabet." She lifted the book up a little more to move it closer to him so that he could see what she was talking about, but as she was just about to pass it over to him, she felt a sharp prick on her finger. "What the fuck?" She exclaimed and dropping the book in the process. The sudden outburst caused the last of the groups to leave the open room leaving it to them.
The book lay open in the middle of the table showing it unknown contents to the both of them. "Are you okay?" Josh asked, trying to make sure that he didn't need to get anything special for her. She just held out her finger to show the injury, but only saw a small prick on her index finger, something like you would see at a doctor's office when they were trying to test their blood for something. A small drop of blood fell off of her finger to land on the book. As it landed a bright flash erupted from the book and soon dissipated leaving the both of them both shocked and bewildered. "What was that?" He asked Jenn, who was equally perplexed at what had just happened.
Looking down at the book, Jenn's face went from bewilderment to one of excitement as she forgot about her finger and quickly brought the book back over to her and eagerly started to read it. Clearing his throat in order to get her attention. Looking up from the book, Jenn had to blink a couple times, something that she normally did when she was coming back to reality. She let out a soft giggle as she gestured down to the book. "I can read it now." Josh looked down at the book and couldn't read anything. The odd symbols decorated the pages with the occasional picture as an illustration to show the practice.
"What are you talking about?" Josh chuckled. "All I can see are some odd symbols at the occasional picture." As he sat back down to drink his coffee, Josh forgot that he had accidentally tipped it over spilling out the contents. At hearing this she gave him a quizzical look, but went back to reading the book. After several minutes, Josh cleared his throat once again causing Jenn to look up at him slightly. "Are you going crazy or something?" He asked wanting to get to the bottom of the matter.
Giving him a small grin, Jenn pushed the book to the side for a moment as she looked back up to him for a moment. "Oh, sorry. I was reading the book and it seems to be some sort of magical tome." She closed it once more and pointed towards the front where Josh still couldn't read it but Jenn kept running her finger across the emerald words in an attempt to show him. "It says right here 'Introduction to Magic By Irma Which'." She looked back at him too see him trying to make out the words, but failing to do so. "Here, let me show you what I mean." She started to turn to a page and looked at her semi full cup and then over to Josh's empty cup. Pointing her finger at the cup, she stated "Enffingo!" She stated with a confident attitude. Looking back over at her cup, she pointed the same finger and stated. "Crustulum!" The cup seemed to move by itself as an odd looking liquid filled it up. "There. I copied my latte and put in yours. Go ahead and try it."
Trusting his girlfriend, Josh picked up the cup and took a quick drink to see if she was right. As soon as it hit his tongue he nearly gagged. "Pumpkin Spice Latte." He announced as he put it back down and pushed it away. Jenn appeared to be elated that it worked. "I don't know how you can drink that crap. Okay I believe you know, but I still don't know why I can't read it.
"Oh, we can have so much fun with this." She giggled as she started to bite her lip and with a lowered voice she whispered. "I want to try something, do you trust me?" She asked but was over joyed when he nodded his head. "I'm going to copy my ______ to you, but I can change it back after a while." Josh truly loved her and trusted her since she had gotten him out of many rough spots since Middle School.
