"Oh Hey, James you left your," but his co-worker was already on the bus, "Milk. Mmm I guess I'll just take it. With how well my job search is going could very well be the only milk carton I can afford." he could easily sell his old yet classic Bentley car but he was too attached.
"If only I could find those creeps who swindle me out of all that money. I would settle my accounts with them." he had lost track of how many times he had cursed Mr Big a well-known scam artist who had remained out of the lock-up by bribery and infinite appeals. Just six months ago his operations had taken over half his savings and the insurance wouldn't pay because he gave it "of his own free will."
Even without traffic, it was nearly an hour's drive to his apartment. Pulling up into the parking he was greeted by a beautiful she-wolf, his girlfriend Elan. She was tall, almost Zane's height with soft grey-white fur and sapphire eyes that seemed to sparkle in the dim moonlight. She also had a trim and alethic body with a noticeable upper chest, she should have been a model instead of a school receptionist. Zane loved her more for her bright and confident personality than her body, but right now he adored the takeout she held. They kissed passionately before going in.
"Seriously a rock nearly blew up your lab?" Elan said between bites of spicing noodles.
Zane nodded, "it's not as uncommon as you think. I mean just look at the Alkali metals on the periodic table."
Zane's apartment or should it be said 'there' apartment since Elan moved in a few months ago, it was certainly a bit bigger than their mutual friends James and Hazel with the tv room and kitchen separate. "Definitely a memorable last day at work. Oh, don't look like that Zaz, I've got some good news!"
"What?"
"Union negotiate a rise. So it's Rio in three months. Caramba. Oh, and LockGoat Solutions left you a message they want you for an interview next week on tuesday." The sly smile along with an added wink told it was a playful tease on her part.
Zane jumped out of his seat, "wait are you serious?" LockGoat Solutions was very particular about who they hired and really did any interviews and unless they were certain they wanted to hire.
"Sure it is. Just check your phone recorder." He knocked over his chair and spilled the contents of Toa Asian Take-Out Extravagance over half the counter, "I'm not cleaning that up Zaz."

So this was what relief felt like. LockGoat did want him for an interview it was a done deal, likely. Zane lay spread out on the couch staring at the TV watching happily a blank screen.
"Shall we watch something Snoppy face," Elan grimaced a bit at his nickname for her but would never let it show when he faced her, " Just thinking of that old cartoon you know," she would say. It did take him time to accept Zaz.
"yes let me just make some tea whilst you pick up a Jim Carrey comedy."
"He does more serious stuff you know."
"Really huh, well pick any so long as it has a hammy Carrey in it."
Fiddling around the kitchen, Elan found that there was no milk for the tea, "mmm nothing to take the heat edge off the tea. Maybe an extra lump of sugar will make up for it. Hey, what's that?"
Peeking out of her boyfriend's work bag was what appeared to be a carton. Unzipping she confirmed it was a carton of milk. "Huh. He must have known and picked it up. Aww, he really is the sweetest sugar snout...I'll cool him sugar snout when he calls me Snoppy face."
Elan was about to pour the milk into the steaming kettle when she remembered that Zane could be quite fickle when it came to adding things to tea, sometimes he wanted other times he wasn't so keen.
"Hey, Zane would you like some creamy milk with your tea?"
A simple yes or no would change the trajectory of the night.
