Tyler stood on the edge of the makeshift table, the vast camp stretching out before him like a land from a dream. Everything was enormous—the tents rising like cliffs, gear scattered about like massive boulders, and the dusty earth beneath his feet now a wild, unpredictable landscape. The sense of scale overwhelmed him, a stark reminder of just how small he had become.
Kai’s deep, steady voice echoed nearby as he packed supplies. “You’ll be alright for now, little one,” he called, his tone calm but carrying the weight of ancient wisdom. “The spirits guided me to you, and they’ll watch over you. I’ll return when I’ve spoken to the elders. In the meantime, be careful. This place may seem still, but the land is always alive.”
Tyler gave a small wave, though he wasn’t sure if Kai could see him. From his tiny vantage point, the camp seemed like a world unto itself. The towering shadows of the tents made him feel like he was navigating an enormous canyon, and the simple tools and objects lying around were now like obstacles on a treacherous path. But despite the looming danger, his curiosity pulled him forward. There was something thrilling about exploring the world from this new perspective.
Taking a deep breath, Tyler carefully slid down the edge of the table, landing in the dust with a soft thud. The ground beneath his feet, once flat and smooth, now felt like walking on the uneven surface of a rocky hillside. Every grain of sand was like a pebble, making each step deliberate and cautious.
He set his sights on Kai’s pack, which had been left on the ground not too far from the table. The towering backpack looked like a fortress from where Tyler stood. Maybe there was something useful inside—something that could help him figure out how to reverse the effects of the kiva’s magic.
As he made his way toward the pack, a soft glint caught his eye—a tiny object half-buried in the sand. It shimmered faintly in the dimming light, its metallic surface reflecting the setting sun. Tyler squinted, trying to make it out. Could it be something left behind by another traveler? Or perhaps an ancient artifact carried by the winds of time?
But before he could investigate further, a faint rustling sound made him freeze in place. The noise came from the underbrush, a subtle but unmistakable movement. Tyler’s heart quickened, his senses on high alert. He scanned the landscape, searching for the source of the disturbance.
The rustling grew louder. Something—or someone—was moving closer.
Tyler instinctively ducked behind a nearby pebble, his tiny body pressed against its surface. His mind raced with possibilities. At his size, even a small desert animal could be dangerous—maybe a snake, a lizard, or even a beetle. The desert was teeming with life, and now, he was a vulnerable part of it.
He glanced back at the looming backpack. It offered shelter, and perhaps safety, but he would have to move fast to reach it. On the other hand, whatever was coming might pass by if he stayed hidden. Then again, the shiny object still called to him—it could be the key to unlocking the mystery of his transformation.
