Chapter #4

Communication Problem

    by: Small1 Author IconMail Icon
"This is...it's so unbelievable," Don said, leaning in closer, squinting to get an even better look at his inch-tall mentor.

Don's mind worked quickly, and he jumped to the correct conclusions. He turned and looked toward the console panel he had de-activated.

"The experiments you've been running! The research...it was to invent a device capable of reducing matter?"

Eric, proud of his young and gigantic assistant, smiled. "Yes. Yes! Exactly!" Eric shouted excitedly.

Don heard the faintest of squeaking. "I'm sorry, Eric. I can't hear you."

"It's simply a malfunction! The repairs would be simple..." Eric tried to scream.

Don shook his head. He could tell that the tiny professor was trying to tell him something, but he could not hear anything but the faintest of squeaks.

"I've got an idea." Don lowered a huge hand onto the platform and moved his upturned palm near the tiny professor. "Get on my hand!"

The words were, for Don's part, a soft-spoken instruction, but Eric heard them as a command from a fearsome, godlike figure. He hastened to comply.

The tiny man scrambled awkwardly onto Don's enormous palm.

Don lifted his hand and took a few steps. He could see the tiny man in his hand, but still could not believe that he was holding a man, a tiny little man, in his hand.

As for Eric, he got dizzy as the hand rose swiftly to astounding heights. Each step taken by his giant assistant was a fearsome quake.

Don deposited Eric on the top of a tall shelf. "Try again!" Don said.

The giant leaned in close to the shelf, turning his head toward the tiny man until Eric was staring into Don's gigantic ear.

Eric nervously coughed. Then, in as loud a voice as he could, he again tried to explain that the device had malfunctioned but could be repaired.

But, turned as he was, Don couldn't see the little man, and even at close range, he still had trouble discerning any of Eric's words. He shook his head.

"Sorry. This isn't getting us anywhere. I think I should..."
