Ryder is strange. In Scout's opinion

Bella and the boys were half way down the stairway when they were interrupted. "Uh oh" said Will.

"Tellytubbie impersonations, William? How sweet." A tall blond boy with an English accent had intercepted them.

"It's from England's rich cultural heritage, am I right?" Will nudged Bella behind him. Ryder's observational skills tended to kick in at the most awkward moments. And Will didn't think Bella made the world's most convincing boy. Scout, taking Will's cue, tugged Bella away, while Will sparred with Ryder.

Scout kept them moving at speed till they reached the lawn. "It's okay" he reassured the unconcerned Bella. "He won't follow us into the sunlight."

"Who is the cute guy?" And how, Bella wondered, did they get to the library from here?

"His name's Ryder. He arrived here two nights ago with a huge Fortnum and Mason's hamper with soil leaking out of the wickerwork." Scout frowned. He hadn't thought about it, but "He's a bit strange."

"Pretentious" Bella suggested. It was the townie's catch-all explanation for Rawley weirdness. "Where's the library from here?"

Scout pointed to a window. "I've never been there, but that room has a lot of books in it" he guessed.

Bella remembered something Scout had said. "Why won't Ryder come outdoors?"

"He has sensitive skin" Scout sneered. "He doesn't know the rules of football either." Satisfied that he had put Bella off Ryder, he added, "Did I tell you that I made crew?"
