The orphans were given permission to shuffle into the refrectory by Noah, who blew a shrill whistle in warning to the kitchen.

As Dorothea put down her sacking, needle and thread she spied a locket, dropped by one of the other girls. Carefully, she put it into her pocket and got up to join the line.

As she passed Noah he grinned malevolently. "What did you just pick up? I saw you, and I could make life very difficult for you."
