Dr. Augustus was a curious scientist, in either definition of the word. He was indeed strange, and indeed had a curiousity about the world. He was especially interested in the way humans aged, and wished to somehow control this process.
A couple years ago, he got his wish. After striking his head on what he regarded as a particularly stupidly-placed wall, he had an epiphany. He understood how he could construct a device to manipulate the ages of living creatures. Taking two years off his job at a pharmaceuticals company, he ferverishly worked on this device, and now he had completed it.
It was a monstrously bulky contraption, full of exposed wires and mysterious blinking lights. It had a range of controls, which only Augustus knew did exactly what. Augustus walked out of his garage, eager to test this device on someone. He would have volunteered himself, but he didn't completely trust this device yet.
