"Daniel?"
Isabelle pushed through the gate, fearful of what Adam said lay behind.
"Oh, hello Isabelle." Daniel stood up, still holding a dirt streaked carrot and brushing off his knees. "Hungry?" he asked, holding the dirty carrot out to her with a grin. "Daniel, I... where is she?" Isabelle looked at him, her eyes wet. "Who?" he asked, stepping towards her with a confused look. "The maid, the pretty little maid. Adam said you were chasing a maid around the garden. And what are you doing picking vegetables? You said you were working in the stables today!"
"Isabelle, you and I both know that Adam has seen brighter days. Not a night goes by that he's not kicking back the tankards in the tavern down the road. A knock on the head back in the old wars didn't do too well for his mental clarity either.. He's just an old man conjuring up stories of pretty maids, nothing more. He asked me to pick the rest of these vegetables until he got back." Daniel took another step forward and placed his hand on her shoulder. "Besides, you know you're the prettiest girl around here anyway"
Isabelle looked away, embarrassed by the redness to her cheeks after his compliment. "What are you doing down here?" he asked, suddenly aware that his hair wasn't as straight as he would have liked.
"Oh, I was just.. well,I.." Isabelle fought for words, kicking the dirt with one foot.
"What? You were just what? Come on, Isabelle, you know you can tell me anything,"
"Well, I.. I want to run away." Isabelle blurted it out, knowing that if she didn't say it fast, she wouldn't say it at all. "And I... I want you to come with me."
