Welcome new members and readers!
How many times have we heard the voice, "not good enough"? Perhaps from our inner critic, which likely had its birth from a time earlier in life when someone said or thought it, about you or even about their own work! A thought based in judgement and comparison, which has little significance to the marvel of you and your unique voice and expression. Echoes in our mind.
Self-doubt, that thief, seems to plague everyone at some time.
It can prevent us from even beginning to write the thoughts that are juggling to be set free on the page.
It can prevent us showing off our wares to others in case the response is negative enough to trigger the old, unhealed memory of a past jolt!
Or if we get by that with courage and confidence, doubt can prevent us entering your work into a contest or to publication as it involves a wider audience with a myriad of opinion.
What a waste when we let that happen. The stories and poems that ONLY we can create will never see light, or touch even perhaps the one person who was meant to love it, or be inspired by it. Yes, not everyone will get it or like it... yet, there might be one. Doubt can destroy the fun of creative expression.
I have let this enemy, doubt, win loads of time in my life, and not necessarily in writing. How many opportunities I have let slide? I shake my head in retrospect. I am sure my muse got frustrated!
The quotes that I chose today had me thinking about the idea of self doubt... and how if we are writing and ourselves are reflected in it, then really building our self esteem and loving ourselves will go a long way in dumping concern about if our writing is "good enough".
We may always be attached to our writings and yet can we detach enough to be observant. I know some authors write and put the work away for a bit to distance the emotional connection so they can come back to it with a fresh more distant eye, and perhaps more open to helpful commentary. Sometimes, we have to get ourselves out of the way! I tell my controlling mind that all the time!
Doubt is a great distractor, distracting us from possibility of greatness!
Here at WDC, there is fine community where everyone can express and step out, even trembling, and receive kind thoughtful help and advice. I know, for myself, this is true. Everyone is at different stages of development and self confidence so we can understand the ups and downs of the process. The step is up to the individual...the more you get out there, the more you grow and learn all while having fun in a positive environment.
So, be brave, new folks, who still watch and read with your gray cases. Pop something in your port!
Be courageous when your muses see a contest prompt and say...wow! maybe.. Go for it! Don't let doubt or comparing to other's entries stop your creativity! Win or lose, expression is the key to building that muscle of going past the doubt. The smaller it gets, the greater you can become.
If I let that doubt get to me, I wouldn't enter anything! LOL When I let it all go.... I have fun as the muse is freer to be and create what flows. I am amazed at how many things I have written outside my comfort zone since I joined.
Now with that said, there are now structures, grammar, skills etc. that are more solid aspects that may need improvement) but YOU do not. Follow your bliss. Trust deeper and higher.
Write on!
When you get noticed or reviewed, remember everything is a Point of View and we all have them. If it brings up your self doubt or emotions, look inside and see what memory is triggered. I am sure most of us do not give our comments to hurt anyone. We just come our own knowing and experience. Take what makes sense and leave the rest.
Now, that all said, whew! What do you know? Have you had self-doubt? What do you do to face it down? Have you ever let it stop you? What do you do to enhance your self-love and confidence?
Remember, only YOU can express and be the YOU you are meant to be. So Dump the Doubt!
Thanks for reading my meandering today.
