Letter from the editor

Back in May, while I was researching the background on dad jokes, I read that it’s a form of cringe comedy. ("Dad Jokes — Laugh or Groan?Open in new Window.) The term made me think for a second. What is cringe comedy? I’ve never heard of it before, but I was familiar with the other forms of comedy like, satire, slapstick, farce, parody, spoofs, and stand-up. I found out that cringe became popular in the early 2000’s with The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Borat.

What exactly does cringe comedy mean? Described in one word: awkward. It’s the type of humor where you’ll laugh out loud, but the situation is very embarrassing, which makes you cringe. It can even be split into two parts. First, the performance itself is cringe worthy, and second, the physical reaction you receive from the cringe worthy performance. Imagine how you feel when you hear a dad joke. They’re so bad that they make you cringe, but you do laugh. What about the host of Award shows? During the opening monologue, it seems their main goal is to make you cringe with the latest gossip in entertainment. Have you ever noticed how you’ll only hear a wave of laughter across the audience? That’s because the rest of the audience is cringing at the jokes, or maybe it could be the sheer shock of what they just heard about themselves.

Actors are famous for using it a lot in their movies. Ben Stiller, Rowan Atkinson from the Mr. Bean series, and Sacha Baron Cohen, who went overboard with cringe in the movie Borat. Even though it gained popularity recently, there are instances from the past that could be termed as cringe comedy. The Three Stooges is one example. Most of their comedy relied heavily on slapstick, and they would take it to the extreme with the trouble they’d get in to. Once the arguments started between each other, it was easy to not only laugh at the banter, but you would cringe at the way they treated each other physically. Another example is British T.V. shows. They have been doing cringe comedy for a long time with Mr. Bean, The IT Crowd, and Faulty Towers. These are classic shows that will not only make you laugh out loud, but will make you cringe, too!

Recent movies and T.V. shows have grown with incidents of cringe comedy. Some examples:

*Film* Movies: Meet the Parents, Anchorman, Miss Congeniality, and my all-time favorite cringe movie, the food poisoning scene from Bridesmaids.

*Tv* American T.V. Shows: Parks and Recreation, Malcom in the Middle and Arrested Development.

*Infow* Even animated cartoons have pushed the cringe boundaries with South Park and Family Guy.

There’s a lot of cringe comedy to choose from, and who knew putting characters in an embarrassing situation could make people laugh and even cringe. By watching these types of movies or T.V. shows, it can inspire us to write our own cringe worthy characters. I can visualize mine right now . . . a lonely guy — who with everyone he befriends, tells nothing but dad jokes. Yeah, sounds good … and scene! *Clapper*

*Gemt* Cringe comedy gems for you! *Gemt*

*Person* Dad Jokes:

Today, my son asked, "Can I have a book mark?" and I burst into tears. 11 years old and he still doesn't know my name is John.

How does a penguin build its house? Igloos it together.

Why are cats bad storytellers? Because they only have one tale.

*Video* Here is one of my favorite cringe scenes from Bridemaids called the food poisoning scene. It's what I call an 'ultimate' cringe scene. Watch Melissa McCarthy closely at the beginning. She comes out with a doozy. The food poisoning scene takes a bit to build-up, but in my head, it's totally worth it! *Smirk*

A sig for the best genre in the world--Comedy!

Ask & Answer

*Questiong* Have you cringed and laughed at a movie, TV show, book, or the real life? Have you ever written a cringe worthy character?

*Thought2* Feedback: From my last newsletter, "Music Video TherapyOpen in new Window.:

*Mic2* Quick-Quill Author Icon: I love watching feel good videos. I get sucked down the rabbit hole. Last night I watched a Netflix documentary on how Google has made algorithms that target our needs, wants and interests. It was scary. I see that since I love these type of videos, FB and YouTube put them first for me to watch. I almost want to disconnect. Then I would be alone.....

Me too! I watch the same ones over and over again. *Bigsmile* Wow, that's something else about the Netflix documentary. *Shock* That IS scary. We'll just have to out-wit them and click on random stuff, then go back to what we like. *Wink*
