Do As Much As You Can
I remember the end of 2019 almost as if it was yesterday. I guess after a year almost entirely spent at home, everything at all feels like yesterday since every day feels like Saturday. I had big plans for 2020. It was going to be the year when I finally get my novel edited to a point that I want to publish it. I wanted to write, review, work, do sports, travel, eat well ... you know ... all of those New Year's resolutions.
"Ha ha ha," said 2020.
Now that pesky 2020 is pretty much water down the river, let's look forward, but with an informed eye on this past year. Instead of running up to every. single. challenge. you see. Stop, drop, hold on. wrong battle cry. That one's for earthquakes. What you should really do is: Think of the plans you had for 2020. See what you really got done. Assess why you achieved the things you did achieve and see how you can build on that. Discover which of your plans went off the rails and recognize whether you seized up due to external factors or if you were just lazy.
There really is no day like today. There is a reason today is Winnie the Pooh's favorite day. Take a look at what you did creatively today. Take a look at everything else you accomplished today. Did you miss out on anything you had planned? Why was that?
Now, take the blueprint for today and build your resolutions for 2021 on it. Because, why do you think you will do something in 2021 that you didn't do today? If you're more of a seven day or one month planner, then do this for the last week or the last month. Which of your plans were you able to execute? Those same plans are the most likely to succeed in 2021.
Personally, I have seen too many of my plans crash and burn to keep making lofty plans. For practical reasons, I will try to come up with a seven day plan that maybe adds one thing for next year. Ideally, that one thing would be more writing. Because, although I am here a lot, I don't write enough. I don't think I can even write any longer.
This means, "Do As Much As You Can" stands for: do the things you can do. The things that are possible. The things you're already doing. Set yourself up for success by putting a small extra thing on your plate. Something that gives you pleasure and advances you as a writer, a creative person, as a human being.
Bring it on, 2021. We've seen it all this year. Between 100 mummies, an asteroid, hurricanes, earthquakes, a pandemic ... you can't scare us. We have pens and we are not afraid to use them.

I received these replies to my last For Author's Newsletter "The Missing Review" :
G. B. Williams wrote: Thank you so much for sharing this information on reviewing. I have not done many reviews over the past 12 months. This was a great reminder of why one should do reviews and how to do a review. I am grateful to all those who have taken the time to review many of my writings, and I think it only fair to review some of theirs as well as the works of others. Thank you.
hbk16 wrote: As authors we cannot evolve without reviews and objective critics. So everyone needs a review. I like to do reviews because I learn a lot and I so want that my review is helpful for others. Great issue!
eyestar~* wrote: Thanks Annette. I really enjoyed your insights on reviewing and agree with the idea that each review is valid as a point of view. Everyone has their own capability and comfort level. Your advice on template use and to watch repeating things that pad the review is so relevant and a good reminder. I had to smile at your last paragraph...about reviewing what you may not even feel comfortable with or gives you hives. LOL Wonderful vibes here too! |
