Letter from the editor

I find in real life we talk a lot about the weather. It might be a Midwestern US thing, but it's been raining, and we're talking about it. We talk about what it might be in days ahead and how much we didn't like it before.

My allergies are appreciating whatever it's doing because I feel a lot less like my head will explode. So here's my question for you today: How does the weather change within your story? Sometimes I find it hard to think about what the weather is like in one part of the world, how it changes from day to day, and what affects the story best.

It's also personal for your characters- do they hate it, love it, can't live without it, run outside to dance in it? Yes, there are all kinds of people and they are interested in all kinds of weather. Make sure your characters feel differently about the weather. My kids love snow but I'd rather skip it. I love a warm spring or summer rain, even if I'll get drenched outside in it. I hate driving in fog but otherwise I don't mind it too much. If everyone hates snow in your world - give us a reason. If they fear the coming storm, we want to know why.

However, if I'm writing in the spring in the Midwest, it will rain a few days. It might snow. All of these can be huge inconveniences for the characters in the story. Midwestern storms are awful. But spring in other areas becomes a different thing. Some places have rain in the winter and not at all in summer. Some of them have snow most of the year and only melt a little bit in the summer.

Whether you use real places or make them up, we need to have some context of the weather. We've had great books and movies that focus on the natural disasters that storms create. We are riveted by what the weather can hurl at us. These stories are an adventure, and they make us consider the natural world a little differently.

I left friends in my home state and then in NY and in Europe and OK then back to home and saw old friends again. Places I have lived more than people have inspired some of my writing including the poetry that I write here.
Places are wonderful inspiration. The world is beautiful and I love to see more of it.

Tell me your favorite thing about the rain!
