Blimey, the seasons move fast, don’t they? I don’t know what it’s like where you are, but here in the UK it’s positively warm at the moment! I’ve been for a walk outside with my sleeves rolled up and everything!
The good thing about the warm weather is that there are lambs on the hills. They’re pretty small still, tails wagging when they drink their milk. It’s utterly adorable. The bad thing about the warmer weather is that it doesn’t just bring people out for a walk, it also brings out pretty much my entire street to sit out on the pavement all day, sunbathing, drinking, getting rowdier and rowdier until, sooner or later, someone gets into an argument with someone else about goodness knows what.
A new addition to the chaos is this guy with an extremely noisy motorcycle who thinks that he’s the coolest thing since sliced bread when he rides it back and forth, back and forth, making me wish that I could perform magic on the blasted bike and have it produce, instead of the sounds that harass my ears now, terrible pop songs like… I don’t know… the complete works of Justin Bieber to shame the owner into shutting it down or, even better, selling it off. Evil, I know, but it’s doing my head in.
This wasn’t what I moved to a small, then-quiet village for. You’d think a countryside village would have lower noise levels than a city, wouldn’t you? And it was fine at the beginning, but now it’s not and I don’t know what to do about it. It’s only a matter of time before the barbecue parties start and let’s just say that their taste in music does not mirror mine… It would be slightly better if there was some agreement in that sense, at least.
My husband and I have been looking for somewhere else to live for a good while now. Of course, it hasn’t been the best time to do that what with the pandemic. Very reasonably, most people have stayed where they are. There were a couple of houses we took a shine to, but so did others and we did not get chosen. One was in the Scottish Highlands, near Loch Ness. It looked like a magical place to live, if you’re okay for your magical place to contain millions of midges. I was fully prepared to put up with them. The other place was in Scotland, too, and I still have hopes that I will move up there one day.
In the meanwhile, I have to deal with people. And the thing about people is that whilst there’s a lot that we have in common as a species, we also each of us have our differences and the people I am surrounded with happen to see the world in a particular kind of light that I can’t quite comprehend.
I fully accept that the problem may be mine rather than theirs. Perhaps I am the weird one, living the life of a somewhat reclusive bookworm, going ooooh and aaaaaah at lambs and other fluffy animals when I could, instead, be sunbathing on a pavement as dogs run loose and do their business everywhere, listening to boom-chi boom-chi music and getting steadily more lightheaded on what definitely is not regular grape juice. They’re doing things their own way, as I try to concentrate on my studies and think of mountains and lakes and yes, midges, and having a garden in which I can simply be… away.
It’ll be like this until winter.
Yes, the seasons are changing. So, perhaps, is my level of tolerance for this stuff. The drama…
