How are your holiday preparations going? Do you celebrate anything or do you wish it would all just go away?
For my mother-in-law this is what she’s been working towards pretty much since the last holidays came to an end. All year long she gathers information on people’s current likes and dislikes - quite the challenge when you have grandchildren, as what’s in and out can be subject to rapid change. And all year long she’s on the lookout for items that may be suited to this person, or that person. She’ll hunt for gifts in supermarkets, on regular markets, in the tiniest of shops. As she’s not so great with buying items online she’ll ask me to order something for a family member and may well ask a family member to order something for me. Some goodies will be handmade, be they knitted or baked or preserved. And then, all treasures collected with great care, she’ll turn into a whirlwind of sorting-and-wrapping action, packing and mailing parcels and placing gifts in bags for those closer by. This process does not take place without some measure of stress, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.
I’m… not like that. Sure, some years I do more than others. I may feel inspired to bake cookies or make chocolate truffles. Mainly, though, I kick into action at some point in November and, as I live in a village with not much in the way of shops around me, I make the majority of my Christmas purchases online. I have never been fond of crowds or busy stores, so I actually much prefer browsing around for items from the comfort of my own home. I’ll order stuff, wrap it (I love wrapping gifts), write my Christmas cards and I’m done. No stress, no hassle.
Everyone’s different. Everyone’s got their own way. I am most familiar with Christmas, but I know that there are differences in how people participate in other celebrations as well. And some people participate in more than one celebration! I know a mixed-faith household who celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas, for example. It’s all about what holds meaning for you and what gives you joy.
I would never find joy in the annual kitchen wars of some households. I know families where every year there’s some drama about how to do the turkey, how to do the stuffing, to sprout or not to sprout and goodness knows what else. I thankfully do not know a household that resembles some kind of sitcom where it’s women in the kitchen and men on the couch, but whether they exist or not, that’s not going to be me, ever. I’m not the best cook in this household anyway. My husband’s far better at it than I am.
This year we’re taking it nice and easy. A good quality steak, salad, pita breads, home-made houmous. For Second Christmas Day (yeah, I was born in the Netherlands, we have two Christmas days)/Boxing Day we’re going to get a Chinese takeaway. We’ll put on some movies, try to keep the cats out of the tree, play some games. Who knows, I may convince my husband to try out my Game of Thrones Monopoly board!
I am nearly done. There’s one more item coming in the mail. Which means one more item to wrap. I still have to deliver my neighbours’ cards. That’s it. I am feeling very relaxed about the whole thing.
What about you? Are you going through your list, checking it twice, or can you put your feet up in the knowledge that everything’s sorted? Whatever your situation, I hope that you are having a lovely time, and that you will enjoy a delightful holiday season.
