Letter from the editor

Sorry...No.

We hear our parent's voice in summer "go outside and play". Perhaps you're saying it to your children. Or maybe you're out there, swinging in your hammock, reading this newsletter. No matter what our muse tells us, sometimes we need a break.

Those of you who have held long-running contests, or invested a lot of time in a fantastic activity, can relate when I say "take a break". I don't mean leave Writing.com! I mean get some fresh air and a new perspective by stepping away from something that is reducing your pleasure. We all love our community, but sometimes too much of a good thing can become stifling.

I find getting out and doing things I love is a good way to get story ideas and people-watching is an awesome activity if you're not able to climb cliffs or deep-sea dive.

The hardest thing to say is the word "no". Everyone loves to be helpful and participate, but sometimes we take on more than we can handle. The very best thing to do is communicate. There's no harm in having your activity take a little break, or closing a contest for a short time.

Take the time to explore how to better manage your time, whether you trim your participation in something that's not giving you the return you wish it had, or delegating some tasks to others. If you joined the site to write, make sure there is time to write. Make a list of priorities and work on streamlining your time to enjoy everything Writing.com has to offer.

Last month's "Contests & Activities Newsletter (June 8, 2022)Open in new Window. newsletter question:
How do you reprioritize your goals?

BIG BAD WOLF is Howling Author Icon: One tries to work on them.

Dream ~★~ Justly Author Icon: Wait a minute... Does that mean you're going to bring back the "15 for 15 Contest --- ClosedOpen in new Window.?!? *Shock2* Awesome! *Delight* I'll definitely keep my eyes open for that.

Schnujo's Doing NaNoWriMo? Author Icon: New Year's Resolutions? You're so optimistic! *Rolling* GOOD FOR YOU! *ThumbsUpGreen*

Leslie Loo Author Icon: Bro i cant keep up with these resolutions lol

MysteryBox Author Icon: Still working on my New Year goals from 2021

TheBusmanPoet Author Icon: I stopped the delusions of New Year's resolutions decades ago. I just did slow changes within my life over those decades and all them resolutions came to fruition. *Smile*

jdennis01jaj: I had a New Year's resolution back in the early 1960s. I've forgotten what it was, but I’m sure I resolved it by now. Does that count?

Serena Blade Author Icon: I didn't do any resolutions. those are false hopes. So, I am doing pretty good just living my life.

Necrofancy Author Icon: No New Year's resolutions for me, because I think it's silly to wait for a new to start making changes/improvements, but I DID quit smoking this year, so there's that :)

Cubby Author Icon: I didn't do any this year. It's like...I know what I need to do. *Laugh* Why set myself up for failure? Just kidding, sort of. {e"Wink} Seriously, I just couldn't think of anything new to use. My resolutions are usually the samo-samo.

Mouse says gobble gobble Author Icon: I reprioritize and reevaluate my goals at the beginning of each week and month. Even if it is to continue what I had going the week or month before. If I didn't reach my goal, I tone it down. If I reached it, I may add to it. As far as yearly resolutions though, I don't do those any more. By the end of February I had already given up.

Turkey DrumStik Author Icon: Given that mine center around grappling with trauma, it's genuinely hard to say how they're going.

elephantsealer Author Icon: Since my number one resolution was to write more, I believe I have done quite a few; and I am loving it....

DevilsBargin Author Icon: I've utterly failed my new years resolution. My resolution for this year was to spend less money at the gas pumps.

Schnujo's Doing NaNoWriMo? Author Icon: I don't always do resolutions, but when I do, they rarely make it this far. However, they have a couple of times and when they did, I made it the rest of the year.

I quit drinking soda one year and it was life changing. I almost never drink it now and that started back around 1990.

I also gave up sweets one year. It took me 7 years to succeed in that and alas, it wasn't as life-changing, but still, it was good to be able to do it for 1 year. *Smile*
