I Wanna See You be Brave with Your Poetry
Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience.
Paulo Coelho
I did a thing. Something I never thought I’d do. Well, I thought about it, for a minute, but then time passed, and it seemed like a thought lost in time.
I started my master’s degree.
And I started it at age 55. I know! I didn’t think I’d do it either, but here I am, and even though I was nervous and a little bit scared, I did it—am continuing to do it--anyway.
How can you be brave today? How can you take a risk? In your life or in your poetry—I mean it is a poetry newsletter. Think about both, but for today, think about it and your poetry. What have you been scared or nervous to try with your poetry? Is it working with meter? Is it working with something more freeform?
This month, I challenge you to write something you’ve been afraid to try. Below is a form that has stanzas that should have unique differences, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to try those things you’ve been afraid to try.
Chanso
The form is French in origin.
MUST HAVES
--Rhyme: poet’s choice but each stanza should have the same rhyme scheme
--Number of stanzas: 5 or 6 and each should be the same length but other than length and rhyme scheme, each stanza should be unique (ie. nonce: for example, one can use internal rhyme, the next can be full of onomatopoeia, the third a combination of the two first, etc.)
--Meter: Syllabic
COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?
--Line count
--Alignment
--Word count
--Topic/theme

Comment: I believe I will take popsicles before Allen Ginsberg's write.
Popsicles appeal to many, for sure. Thanks for sharing! |
