About This Newsletter

I just checked my NaNoWriMo novels. I have one completed rough draft. I have four uncompleted first drafts. I am 75 years old, so I think I should consider editing the rough draft that (I think) is completed.

Letter from the editor

November is first draft month for people writing new novels. It is "finish the first draft month" for those who didn't complete last year's first draft. If I decide to participate in NaNoWriMo (I've been known to wait until the last minute to decide.) I will work on completing one of the unfinished novels. If I don't participate in NaNoWriMo, then I will edit the first draft of my completed novel.

For those of you who are first time participants in NaNoWriMo, I have learned from my own efforts to participate in NaNoWriMo.

1. The world and every creature in it is out to stop you from completing the 50,000 words. So, prioritize the interruptions you will accept.

2. Once you start a chapter, keep writing even if one or all of the characters decide to take the novel in a different direction. Add what they've decided when they begin dictating the direction to you. If you're a planner and need to continue your plan in the next chapter, do so. Remember, this is the first draft. You still have to edit the novel when you're finished.

3. In addition, to the breaks your body requires, take take periodic breaks, . If you can combine the two types of breaks into one, that's probably the best way to do it.

4. Change your phone's voice mail message to something similar to "I'm NaNoWriMoing. Please leave a message and I will get back to you ASAP." Please remember, people calling will probably text you rather than leave a message. Prioritize those you respond to. Parents, spouses, and bosses are probably A priorities, while all others are B and C priorities.

Do you have any advice gleaned from past years NaNoWriMo? If so, let me know?
