About This Newsletter

“A game is an opportunity to focus our energy, with relentless optimism, at something we’re good at (or getting better at) and enjoy. In other words, gameplay is the direct emotional opposite of depression.” ― Jane McGonigal

“I never ask them, “Do you have badges?” I ask, “Do you make your users feel accomplished?” ― Yu-kai Chou

Gamification

While gamification has its roots in the 1970s, the word "gamification" was coined in 2003 and the type of gamification that we meet in so many places now dates back to about 2010. The idea behind gamification is to increase engagement with non-preferred activities. Or to make difficult things more fun to learn, appreciate, and do more of because we want to. Does anyone remember Xerox printers of the 1990s? A little bunny was on the pixelated display and walked a user through the menu. While the bunny didn't exactly play with the user, it created a different experience in contrast to the functional menus of other copy machines.

Even if you think that you have never taken part in gamification, you have. Gamification is all around in most everything we do.

Writing.Com is one such place where gamification helps to keep us engaged and interested. Those of us who are motivated by numbers can track everything in our Member Activity area on our Community page. That is one of the many ways we can measure our own involvement and compare it to others on the site. But that is not all.

*Bullet* There are the actual games we can play in the IM console.

*Bullet* Community Recognition (that number between our handle and suitcase) grows the more we interact and the longer we stay on the site as members.

*Bullet* Most contests and activities give out Merit Badges. Those used to be limited to those designed by the site owners. "My PreciousOpen in new Window.

*Bullet* For some time now, we can design our own, exclusive badges to be hand-made by The StoryMistress Author Icon. "Commission a Custom Merit BadgeOpen in new Window.

*Bullet* Awards to be affixed to either an item or to an author's whole portfolio are another way we can reward each other for a job well done. And we have the ability to ask for the creation of an award that is unique to our purpose. "Commission a Custom AwardiconOpen in new Window.

*Bullet* Trinkets came on the scene and took the site by storm sometime in 2016. "TrinketsOpen in new Window. We can make them ourselves and use them in many different ways. Create a new Trinket  Open in new Window.

Gamification for creative people is only limited by our imagination. We can come up with so many ways to motivate each other to write more, review more, and genuinely have fun with writing. Go ahead, take writing serious. But play games with words too.

What kind of enhancements make you want to take part in contests and activities?
