It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!
Oh wait, no? Not yet? We've had that pumpkin spice stuff out since midsummer so why not talk about the winter holidays?
Santa arrives in [Refresh to load countdown.]!
What? Too soon? Maybe. But I thought I'd put this out there for all the contest hosts, activity organizers, and contestants. Winter (US) holidays are not that far away.
Contest hosts - life is busy during the holidays! Make sure your contest is picture-perfect and ready to accept contestants. Update your pages to current dates and make sure any rules that might need clarification are ready to go. And check your gift point bank balance, do you have your prizes?
Contestants - We're busy, aren't we? I always end up with extra invites to visit, dinner plans, and last-minute gifts to wrap. Bank some time! If you have some story outlines you haven't fleshed out, take a look at them with the holiday contests in mind. If you have most of the work written or at least outlined, it won't be too difficult to drop in a prompt or shift a little to suit the contest.
Activity hosts - Are you updated? Have you organized some help? We all need help! Just like we all need that extra roll of tape, we need to be prepared. What worked and what kind of limped along? Ask some of last year's participants if there was anything too vague or too hard. Keep in mind a deadline ON a holiday means YOU have to log in to close the contest.
Participants - Treat yourself to a coffee and some time to relax, participate and enjoy all the fun WDC has to offer. We just finished all the birthday fun, wasn't it a good time? There are lots of great prizes to compete for in the next few months, take advantage and build up your gift point bank. You'll be glad you did when it comes time to renew your account or buy some cool swag in the WDC shop.
So while you're catching your breath from all the birthday fun, take a step back and look at how ready you might be for the next few months and make a plan!
As always, Write On!

SEPTEMBER SITE CONTEST
Genre Prompt for September 2023: Regional
You can do a good deed by reviewing any qualifying item* on Writing.Com and you might win! Enter as many times as you want to increase your odds of being selected as a prize winner!
Explain Who (or what) And Why? Solve this mystery in exactly 23 sentences!
Use the picture prompt to create an engaging opening for a story. It should hook me into wanting to read the rest of the story. Your opening line(s) may be one or two sentences. But no more than that. Any longer and your entry will be disqualified.
Fantasy genre first chapter only. Old or newly written. One entry per member per round only.
I'm looking for a good few bees to join the Hive and help JUDGE the Best of the Rest at the Bee Hive!
Mind you, the Group is still under construction, but right now I need judges for the Best of the Rest at the Bee Hive. As the Hive grows, BEES will be able to give out Group commissioned merit badges and awardicons to their favorite items.
This isn’t a contest, but rather, a place to entertain (yourself and/or others), to philosophize, to be serious or humorous or mysterious! It’s a place to examine and express your thoughts from the springboard of daily prompts.
As you are inspired, respond to a daily prompt with UP TO FOUR COMPLETE SENTENCES. We’re a busy society, so more than four might prove taxing to our schedules.

The objective: create the most spectacular, unique birthday inspired trinket content inside trinket may include (but is not limited) to quotes, poems, short stories, facts, trivia, links, photos, etc.
Fear has unfortunately caused many m0nsters to be without a home, parents, or family. This has left them scared, alone, angry, sad, confused, and misguided. Through the hard work and dedication of "S.C.R.E.A.M." and its Field Agents, m0nsters the world over are finally being recognized for their true selves: affectionate, funny, protective, and energetic creatures that just need your love!
The Challenge: Write a poem or story and incorporate the prompted lyric somewhere in your work, word for word.

This month's question: How do you prepare for upcoming contests or activities? Send in your answer below! Editors love feedback!
Last month's "Contests & Activities Newsletter (August 30, 2023)" question: Have you written something for a contest that ended up being very special?
Grincherella sees candle light : Yes! "Christmas Lights" (Check the authors port for the item rated GC)
It's a bit "out of season", but was my first ever Erotica.
It started with a 690 word "corset" as an entry for "Weekly Quickie Contest"... Dawn Embers was very sensible with erotica virgin me, and suggested I extend the story.
It's so special as I entered it into last year's Quills via the self-promotion forum, and it ended up a Finalist.
H. M. Marie :
In college I wrote an essay from the point of view of an epileptic coming out of a seizure. It was just for an essay contest in school, but I ended up mentioning it to my neurologist. She got excited to read it, so I sent it to her, and it ended up being published in a newsletter that goes out to neurologists throughout my state. I wasn't expecting that kind of response, but she said it was a unique perspective that doctors rarely think about or get to see. For me, that was pretty special. It showed me I could use my writing to bridge barriers and create understanding. Since then that's been the goal; everything I write has an underlying meaning or message.
Thank you for your responses, it is much appreciated! L~ |
