We are fortunate that WdC has so many games, activities, challenges, and contests for us to participate in...should we desire. There are contests for a variety of writing genres and styles; surely something for everyone. And for those that don't really care to compete, there are challenges to participate in.
Did you know that any member of WdC can host a contest or activity?
Yup, anyone! But, before you decide to do so, there are a couple of things you need to know and understand to ensure a successful event.
Contest - What is it?
Contests typically run for a month at a time. Although, some are daily, weekly, or bimonthly. It's all up to the coordinator/contest owner.
Contests name a winner and provide a prize. In some cases, there are multiple prizes given; first, second, third, and/or honorable mention.
If you are going to run a contest and provide prizes, it's important to ensure you have enough gift points to pay for those prizes. Equally important is to make sure you have the time to run a contest and will be able to announce winners promptly.
Challenges
Challenges are different because entries are not judged. Participants are awarded for their participation. There are all types of challenges and they can run for any length of time. I run a poetry writing challenge where participants write a poem a week. Choconut runs a reading challenge. 🌻 thankful pwheeler nano has a challenge that awards participants just for showing up and checking in. (It's a great activity and helps participants to build healthy habits.)
Games
There are a variety of member-run games around the site. Sometimes there is a fee for participating, other times not. Two members, that quickly come to mind, who offer some great game are Ẃeβ࿚ẂỉԎḈĥ and . . . Jeremy . I will link some below so you can check them out!
Activities
There are so many different types of activities available on WdC. It' would be difficult to describe them all. Each is as unique as the host. For example, Solace.Bring has two activities. One is to write 8 lines of poetry based on a daily prompt and the other is a fill-in-the-blank. Schnujo's Doing NaNoWriMo? runs an activity that encourages participants to enter contests around the site. NaNoNette has an activity where participants are required to enter a contest and write reviews.
Now what?
Once you have decided what you want to host, you need to iron out the details. For example, the rules, guidelines, the types of prizes, and deadlines.
If this is your first time hosting something on WdC, take a look at what other members have created to get some ideas on how to set it up and what to include. A clear, concise, and clean format of the rules and guidelines will eliminate confusion for anyone who visits.
The majority of contests, challenges, and activities all start with a "Message Forum"; which means the minimum of a 'Basic Membership' level is needed.
The Great Reward
Sure, prizes are awesome! Who doesn't love winning? But, the great reward is getting to know other WdC members, writing, reading, and reviewing.
Do you have questions?
If you are interested in creating an activity, etc. and not sure where to start or just want some help, feel free to drop me an email. There are many members around WdC who are always happy to help, too.
