Where do you write?

Last month I discussed writing styles, and I asked where do you write. I got some great feedback, and W.P. Gerace Author Icon's comment made me think of another question:

What do you listen to when you write?

Do you write in silence? I could never! I have a hard time working with traffic going by outside my window or people walking down the street. I find it way too distracting!

But listening to music is tricky for me, too. It can't be anything new and often, I can't listen to anything with lyrics. So it's mostly scores, instrumental, classic or jazz with little-to-no lyrics. I find it stimulates my mind without being distracting. And from past experience, listening to the same or similar music during long projects (whether it's studying for an exam, writing a short story or novel, judging WDC contest entries, etc.) it can help set the mood for my brain, you know? Like, telling myself it's time to get to work!

I'm very much a routine person, and I totally get that not everyone is the same, so I'm curious. What do you listen to when you write? How do you set the scene? I've listened to music, watched familiar TV shows or movies, but I'm usually not without some type of background noise. How about you?

Take care, and as always, keep on writing! *Quill*

Feedback from my last newsletter "Contests & Activities Newsletter (September 20, 2023)Open in new Window., which discussed where you like to write:

Thank you so much for featuring my Quiz and the Honey Pit in the Newsletter. I need more Bees so I appreciate it! Where do I write? I write at work during downtime to decompress and I write in home, downstairs, in the family room. Neither place is special, just practical, I suppose. ~ SantaBee Author Icon

You're welcome! Neither is special, but it sounds like part of your routine. Whatever works for you! *Smile*

I work from home and have turned a bedroom into an office. I occasionally write in there, but the majority of the stuff I've produced has been written on my Lenovo ThinkBook while lying in bed. A routine is conspicuous by its total absence - I churn stuff out when I'm in the mood and can go weeks without writing a single line. Now that I've got my memoir out of my system, I've become the literary equivalent of a doodler - the chances of me producing "The Great British Novel" are zero. *Smile* - Once in Ryan David's City Author Icon

Sounds like you found what works for you! Congrats! *Smile*

If I'm going into the office, then I do work on the train - I live a bit further away from the city I work in but I don't mind the longer commute as it means I always get a seat at a table where I can scribble away! It's only 2 days a week as well - the rest of the time I write at my desk :) ~ citruspocket Author Icon

I like the variety! And I love riding trains! I should try writing on the train someday!

Greetings Spidey,
I do hope you are doing well today my friend. Personally I work from home and write from home. I have 2 monitors for my work at home job then when I log off I roll over to my other 2 monitors and write. I normally write with my beats in my ear a little Tina Turner anything in that kind of style of music Madonna etc. It gets me pumping. On occasion I do go to Starbucks to write but that is extremely rare for me. I rather write my desk in my home office. I also write out a writing schedule and use this Writing Scheduling Book I found from an author who has a You Tube Channels. It just helps me out. Have a beautiful blessed day my friend. :)
Yours Truly,
Bill G.

I'm doing well, too! That sounds like an awesome set-up! I'm not sure I could write with music like that, though. I find that music with lyrics distracts me sometimes... Though it could work as long as it's something I'm very familiar with, I suppose. That gives me an idea for my next newsletter! Happy Writing! *Smile*

I've been known to hit a write-in or two during NaNoWriMo, but my standard workspace is my technically-a-bedroom office. I'd possibly consider taking my laptop on the road more often, but I have a 4-year-old grandson who loves hanging out with his Papa. *Bigsmile* ~ Merry_Mikey Author Icon

Ooh, I've done a few write-ins! They were fun, but I definitely prefer to write alone when I can. Happy Writing! *Smile*
