The Dig

It is never pleasant to come upon the dead in a lonely place at midnight.

The archeologist felt the hair stand on the nape of his neck as he stared at the corpse sprawled upon the old floor before him.

This part of the dig was alight with candles in niches along the walls. Ancient tapestries were hung between figures of curious gods carved of dusty limestone that reflected dimly on the black mahogany floor.

Bracing his wavering courage, he examined the body. The dead man’s head sagged on broken vertebrae, and his throat had been crushed to a pulp of purplish flesh.

There was a movement to his right, and a leg made of solid stone savagely kicked him in the belly and dropped him gagging for air.

His eyes tried to focus on his assailant as another kick landed in his mouth. He screamed through a ruin of splintered teeth, blowing bloody froth from his mangled lips.

The heavy steps of the stone sentinel moved before him, and with inhuman strength, it lifted him by the neck from the floor. With eyes glittering like gems, the god crushed the archeologist's head like a grape, dropped him, and then slowly returned to its pedestal.

DEAD LETTERS

The Editor Speaks

I have been writing and doing the horror newsletter for many years. Sometimes I get excellent feedback, sometimes I don't. What is it that makes readers of a newsletter respond? Perhaps it is more convenient to just glance it over and move on. I'm sure we all have busy schedules, but aren't we also writers? Isn't that why we are here? Force yourself, if you have to, to write a response or review of the newsletter you have just read. It can be negative or positive, it doesn't really matter. Or does it?
