Regular WdC Writing
Now that it's January and the New Year's resolutions are in fully swing, let's talk a little bit about a regular writing habit. Many writers (myself included!) start the new year with plans to be more productive with our writing efforts. Which is great, but it can sometimes be difficult to figure out where to start; "write more" is always a bit of a nebulous concept.
Below in the featured items are a list of regular activities being run all throughout 2025, including a weekly short story activity, an activity designed to encourage you to enter contests, and a handful of blogging activities that offer daily prompts (or a large repository of prompts) to keep you writing without the pressure of entering a contest. Or, if contests are more your style, there's always the site's two premier daily writing challenges for those who are so inclined.
While writing to prompts or participating in activities is far from the only option when it comes to developing a writing habit, it can be a great source of inspiration for those looking to get back into the habit and just need some motivation to commit words to a page. Sometimes as writers we just need a little nudge to start to formulate words in response to an idea or an inspiration, which is why prompt repositories or activities that regularly provide new options to consider can be immensely helpful.
Whether the existence of regular, recurring contests and a wide variety of prompts is helpful to you or not, I sincerely wish everyone the best of luck with their writing goals in 2025!
Until next time,
Jeff

I also encourage you to check out the following items:
| | The Bradbury [E] #2277001 If you write 52 short stories, one of them's bound to be great... right? Let's find out! by Jeff |
EXCERPT: Welcome to The Bradbury, a year-long short fiction writing activity!
The namesake of this activity and its premise are based on advice that acclaimed science fiction author Ray Bradbury once gave during a keynote address of a writer's symposium, where he said:
If you can write one short story a week — it doesn’t matter what the quality is to start, but at least you’re practicing — at the end of the year, you have 52 short stories and I defy you to write 52 bad ones. Can’t be done. At the end of 30 weeks or 40 weeks, or at the end of the year, all of a sudden a story will come that’s just wonderful.
We're going to put that theory to the test, and challenge you to write 52 short stories in 2025!
EXCERPT: This year's edition is different from years past. I Write in 2025 exists for those who like to have a place where they can get feedback for contest entries they wrote. There will be review rewards.
EXCERPT: A new blog prompt will be emailed to all Blogging Circle of Friends members each day at around 11:00 PM or later (especially on Wednesday) for the next day.
EXCERPT: Prompts will be sent out to your mailboxes and posted in the forum below on Monday-Sunday at 11:00 PM WDC time on the day before the posted blog entries are due (e.g. prompts for Monday's blog entries will be sent out and posted on Sunday evening) except for Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
| | Blog Harbor [E] #1700829 A prompt repository for bloggers that sometimes hosts one-off activities! by Jeff |
EXCERPT: Everyday blogging. The core function of Blog Harbor is to provide prompts for blogging inspiration. If you choose to respond to a prompt, just create a forum post with a subject line that reads: Prompt #___ (where the blank is replaced with specific prompt number you're responding to... i.e., Prompt #1, Prompt #22, Prompt #58, etc.). In the body of the message, create an {entry:#######} link to your blog post... and that's all there is to it! There are no participation requirements or quotas to fill. Participate as often or as rarely as you like!

Feedback from "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (December 11, 2024)" about taking a holiday break:
I don't often travel for the winter holidays since my family lives in places where it's cold and might have snow. Usually am working around the holidays too since other people traveling means it is a busy time for pet sitting. This year, my grandmother used miles to get me a plane ticket, so I get to spend Christmas in northern Utah with family. With all of the health stuff, treatments and such, will be nice be somewhere else with family but I will miss my cats.
