Janet's works are everywhere and she sells out with each book she releases. Thought I'd try something a slight bit different than what we'd looked at in the past, and hopefully it will work for you too.

Letter from the editor

For this month's January mystery newsletter, we take a simple foray into the world of Janet Evanovich. She is a bestselling author many times over and she just continues to work and pave the way for others.

Janet Evanovich (née Schneider; April 22, 1943) is an American writer. She began her career writing short contemporary romance novels under the pen name Steffie Hall, but gained fame authoring a series of contemporary mysteries featuring Stephanie Plum, a former lingerie buyer from Trenton, New Jersey, who becomes a bounty hunter to make ends meet after losing her job.

She began writing novels in her thirties. To learn the art of writing dialog, she took lessons in improv acting. For ten years, she attempted to write the Great American Novel, finishing three manuscripts that she was unable to sell. After someone suggested she try writing romance novels, Evanovich read several romances and discovered that she enjoyed the genre. She wrote two romances and submitted them for publishing.

Still unable to find a publisher, Evanovich stopped writing and signed with a temporary employment agency. Several months after beginning work for them, she received an offer to buy her second romance manuscript for $2,000, which she considered an "astounding sum".

That novel, "Hero at Large", was published in 1987 in the Second Chance Love category under the pseudonym Steffie Hall. After finishing her twelfth romance, however, Evanovich realized that she was more interested in writing the action sequences in her novels than the sex scenes.

The Stephanie Plum series, Evanovich's most famous creation, centers around the adventures of a lovable and often clumsy bounty hunter navigating the often-chaotic world of New Jersey.

Stephanie's charm, wit, and endearing determination, coupled with the series' fast-paced plot twists and engaging characters, have earned it a loyal following. The Stephanie Plum novels are a delightful cocktail of humor, romance, and suspense.

Evanovich masterfully balances lighthearted moments with thrilling encounters, keeping readers hooked from the first page to the last. The series has become synonymous with Evanovich's writing style, cementing her reputation as a queen of the mystery thriller genre.

The sixth book in the series, “Hot Six”, was the first of her novels to reach number one on the New York Times Best Seller List. Her subsequent Plum novels have each debuted at number one.

Beyond the Stephanie Plum series, Evanovich has showcased her versatility as an author with other successful series. The Knight & Moon series features a paranormal detective agency with a unique twist, blending mystery, romance, and supernatural elements.

The Wicked series, on the other hand, delves into a world of fairies, magic, and suspense, offering readers a captivating escape into a realm of fantasy and intrigue. Evanovich's ability to craft compelling narratives within diverse genres highlights her talent as a writer.

She effortlessly navigates different worlds and themes, creating engaging stories that resonate with a wide range of readers. Her willingness to experiment and explore new genres has undoubtedly contributed to her success as a prolific author.

Evanovich has collaborated with other authors to create exciting new series. The Fox & O'Hare series, co-written with Lee Goldberg, features a charismatic con man and a talented thief as they navigate a world of cons and escapades.

The Full series, written with Charlotte Hughes, introduces a unique protagonist, a full-figured detective who brings a fresh perspective to the mystery genre.

Evanovich's collaborative efforts showcase her ability to work effectively with other writers, contributing to a diverse and engaging body of work. These collaborative projects highlight her versatility and willingness to explore different writing styles and perspectives, further enriching her literary repertoire.

She enjoys a fulfilling personal life, balancing her writing career with family and leisure activities. She resides in North Carolina with her husband, where she finds inspiration in the natural beauty surrounding her home.

She also has a fondness for Hawaii, a place that she finds rejuvenating and conducive to creativity. Beyond her writing, Evanovich is a passionate advocate for literacy and reading.

She actively supports initiatives aimed at promoting reading and encouraging children to embrace the joy of books.

Her dedication to literacy reflects her belief in the transformative power of reading and its ability to spark imagination and foster a love of learning. Janet Evanovich's literary accomplishments have earned her numerous accolades and honors throughout her career.

She has been recognized for her contributions to the mystery thriller genre, receiving awards such as the Dilys Award two times and the Quill award in 2005 and 2006.

Her books have consistently appeared on bestseller lists, solidifying her place as a literary force.
Janet Evanovich's impressive bibliography encompasses over 30 novels, including multiple series and standalone titles.

Her most popular works include the Stephanie Plum series, the Knight & Moon series, the Wicked series, and the Fox & O'Hare series, each offering readers a unique blend of humor, suspense, and adventure.

She has also written several non-fiction books, including writing guides and personal memoirs. Evanovich's diverse body of work reflects her versatility as an author and her ability to connect with readers across different genres and themes.

Her enduring popularity and the consistent success of her books showcase her talent as a storyteller and her ability to captivate audiences with her engaging narratives that reach her followers around the world.
What an impressive life this person has led, and is still leading.

Janet Evanovich is 80 years young and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down in her book writing process. Her family is actively involved in the Evanovich business and with this kind of support, we will continue to see more books from this author for months to come.

Well, that’s all for this very cold month. I do hope you are well in your respective hometowns, I do take a beat to think and pray for the healing in Los Angeles fires and anyone this impacts, to reflect for gratitude for our homes and families who remain healthy, safe and sound, and God willing, till next time, since our days are not known, be well dear readers.

Ask & Answer

Bada bing, bada bang! Happy New Year and all of that jazz.

What a crazy January did this month blow in for the start of 2025! Since when did snow fall in FLORIDA? Snow in North Carolina? Snow in Texas, for God's sake? An unprecedented round of fires in Los Angeles that destroyed too many urban family homes...what was going on with this MONTH?!?!

Now that I got that out, let's take a look at the two dear readers who graciously answered the January mystery newsletter question:

Ichabod Crane Author IconMail Icon
Golden Age of Detective Fiction for his mother.
3 Different Names
Patrick Ruell, Dick Morland, and Charles Underhill

Fictiøn Ðiva the Wørd Weava Author IconMail Icon also submitted the following:
The author's mother was a fan of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. Reginald Hill was an author of a successful detective series with 40 more published writings to his name. Bonus Question: Novels originally published under the pseudonyms of Patrick Ruell, Dick Morland, and Charles Underhill.

Thank you so much.

Thank you my studious readers of this newsletter! You have double MBs coming! Please send me an email pls so I can get them out to you both.

Now, on to this month's newsletter question. The author didn't start out as a mystery writer. How many romance books did she write before turning to mystery/detective novels? What pseudonyms did Evanovich use? Bonus question: Again, name the pseudonyms for an additional gift.

The first five readers to answer the first question will receive a MB and as always, those who answer the bonus question (Name: the pseudonyms Janet Evanovich used in to write with) will receive another MB for their involvement.

Wow! Due to your fantastic support through 2024, I will again stay on as this newsletter's editor. Thank you so much, as last year was a wild one. 2025 is starting slow, thankfully, on my end, but I can report that I am taking a 8 week Idea to Market class in hopes of turning things around for 2025. Tiktok got banned (for less than 24 hrs. but I didn't remove my app but sadly, my dear grandson, Ares, really thought it was over. Of course, when you are this young, and you here final sounding news, his lil world ended for him. Which I think is entirely unfair to...okay...sorry lol*Hug1**Frown**Hug2* We all got together and he's using another person's account so we can continue to speak as we always have.

I let the dear boy know that you need to hold fast, don't make any changes, especially when the higher ups know this is something as lucrative and far-reaching as Tiktok has become (even I have a Tiktok with many followers lol) and it appears to be threatened. I told him, I've seen a whole lot more than you can imagine so check with the one whose been here more decades than you lol...the bs, lol, is for real.

Well, with that lovely final thought, I thank you again, as always, as we are, moving on to the next month. Cue Thor Ragnarok (It's MY Biirrthdaaaaay...next month, wheee!*Music2**Music2* write on!
