Did you, though?

Here's the thing. If you read my newsletters, you may occasionally catch a repeated theme. The reason for that is because WdC is not a static thing. People come and go, and even people who have been here consistently for a while can forget stuff. I know I do.

Let's pretend we are going to enter a contest here on our favorite writing site. Which contest, you ask? Which ever one you would like. I am going to give you three things you are going to do when you decide to enter this contest, no matter what.

Ready?

Add your word or line count somewhere in the body of your entry. At the end of your writing is fine, but you do you, Boo. If you want to make sure you are being completely compliant, you can list it when you post your entry, as well. Lack of a word or line count is probably the number one reason people get disqualified from contests. Don't be like that! If you are disqualified, make sure it is for a really good reason, not a silly little thing like this.

Add genres to your entry. While in edit mode, you will be required to add at least one genre to your item. Many people choose "other." While this is not technically wrong, it isn't correct, either.

You should pick all three if you can, with nary a single "other" to be found. Here's why. Another member may read that chart-topping, contest-sweeping entry of yours and decide to nominate it for a Quill award. If you do not have genres attached to it, you could cheat yourself out of a potential future award. If that sounds like a lousy idea to you, make sure you have the genres attached.

Read the rules. ALL of the rules. Read the entire contest page, for that matter. Read those rules again right before you post your contest-winning entry. Make sure you have metaphorically dotted every "i" and crossed every "t." Getting disqualified for a simple rule infraction is completely avoidable. If you don't understand a rule and need clarification, send an email to the contest owner with your question rather than entering and hoping all will be well.

We have tons of great contests to choose from here at WdC. Here is a place to find what contests are out there. Add it to your favorites so you always have this resource.

I have one that includes guest judges but need to get more people to volunteer as some have left the site and others aren't available to judge rounds anymore. Thanks for the newsletter with some tips on how to conduct a possible search.
I hope it helps! I am still working on getting "Contest Central StationOpen in new Window. up and running to my satisfaction, so hopefully help will be on the way soon.

No... but when I started my own contest, I could not have done it without the help from Lilli ☕ Author Icon and Schnujo's Giving Away GPs Author Icon - advice, suggestions, support to their followers, etc. They made it so that I have run other activities since.

So, yes, ask for help. It can be absolutely invaluable.
You had some heavy hitters behind you! Good job!

Actually, I wanted to do a raffle or something for the 7/7 forum to raise funds for a commissioned 7/7 Merit Badge. I tried to make a logo with AI and I couldn't do it and then I kind of lost heart, also despite being a member on here for a long time, I have never done a raffle. *Confused*
Jenny, we can join forces if you would like and come up with a something fab. I'll shoot you an email.

I once considered a trivia contest but the idea fell through.
That sounds like something that would be perfect for the WdC Birthday Week. Find a friend and toss around some ideas.

100%, Annette! I love to see groups of people pulling together like we do at Anniversary Reviews. You do a great job keeping everything running, too!

I'm always coming up with new prompts and I'd like to see a contest offering a variety of prompts to choose from every month. I'd like to give the contestants an opportunity to write something that could eventually be published but I just can't bring myself to read long pieces of work.

I don't know. I have so many ideas, but I just don't have the energy .
You are correct, putting together and running a contest or activity takes a lot of that precious energy. That's why some people with the ideas to share and limited time/energy to give might work out well as a helper to someone else's contest/activity.
