Knowledge is Power
A solid action/adventure story that flows nicely follows a few well used narrative pathways. Either a stranger comes to town, or someone leaves. The hero can be a single person, a dynamic duo, or a small group (usually the five-man-band). Once the inciting incident jolts the hero into action, they are on a quest.
One idea for a quest could be the search for knowledge. A lot of typical action/adventure heroes travel to far-off places with the desire to discover something specific. Often, previous discoveries, stories, myths, and fables have laid the seeds for these quests for knowledge. Even if somebody thinks they are looking for an artifact, they are really looking to learn more about the history of a place, people, or era.
In older action stories, the hero was often a soldier or someone representing the law.
Then came the archeologists that found ruins and pottery.
Next the history professors who figured out how to read symbols and dead languages.
The next big thing in action adventure is going to be the anthropologist. This division is related to archeology in the sense that they dig up the past, but they go further with it. Instead of just marveling at the artifact and trying to figure out where to store or display it, anthropologists want to know who, what, why, when, and how does it relate to modern humans?
In recent years, anthropologists have been able to push back the time of humans and proto humans by many thousands of years through the study of bones, teeth, and tools. Where did they find those bits? A lot of them are found in places that are hard to get to and dangerous to be in. The typical anthropologist travels with a detachment of heavily armed guards. There have got to be some new classics in this genre yet to come!
When thinking the next action/adventure hero that you want to create, don't overlook the less flashy sounding scientific divisions.

Replies to my last Action/Adventure newsletter "Collecting Trophies" that asked: What is the strangest artifact or trophy that your action hero found?

In my book 'Relick' (still available somewhere). the heroes find poo. Human excrement. But very important poo. The world needs this.
And it offended some readers so much Amazon removed all reviews!
Needless to say... it's not a serious book.
The reviewers didn't know about anthropology?
