As long as people have been writing fiction on the subject of love, research and debate on the topic has been going on, as well.
Love can be said to be the point of life itself, and the quest for love is a universal subject. Nearly anyone can relate to a love story, and that’s because nearly everyone is either searching for or delighting in love itself.
To write believable fiction, it is necessary to do research first, and this can be said of all genres, including romance. By studying human behavior, we learn not only how our human characters may interact, but how our readers will react to their actions.
What greater inspiration for fiction is there than real life? The next time you are searching for a topic, conflict, or characters for your love story, take a look around you. Love is everywhere and it touches everyone.

Essays & Articles
There are a plethora of essay and articles written by talented members on this site. By reading these, you can gain various viewpoints on love. Perhaps an item can make you see love in a different way? Or provide you with various opinions for your characters.
Polls
Polls give you a sense of statistics when it comes to its subject. By viewing the results of a poll, you can see where the opinion of the majority may lie on a particular topic. Also, polls can help you to see the variety of opinions on one topic. Polls are a great tool in that you don't have to be the creator of the poll to benefit from it. As a viewer, you can participate and also see the results.
Surveys
Surveys work in mostly the same manner as polls, though they tend to go into more detail. Creating a good survey with detailed, easy to understand questions can be a great opportunity to get opinions and information from your readers.
Contests/Forums
Contests and forums are great ways to put all that research to good use. Contests may allow you to write something new and forums can provide an opportunity to showcase your work or discuss the work of others.

In searching for romance contests, I didn't find very many open contests. That doesn't mean, though, that there are only a few opportunities to write romance stories for open contests. Love stories can be melded with almost any genre. Try it with some of these contests:
