Interactive Stories
This month I'd like to feature an interesting item option here at Writing.com, the Interactive Story.
An interactive story is a never-ending story that you as the host start with a first chapter. You are then allowed to add 5 options for others to continue the story. After the first and second chapter additions, you are allowed to add two further options for writers to add. The story spreads from the first chapter like spokes in a wheel.
Readers of interactive stories get to choose which version of the next chapter they would like to read. Interactive stories can be any genre: romance, adventure, horror, cult/fetish, sports and anything else you can imagine. While searching for an interactive to participate in and find the top stories unappealing, you can choose the "Filter most common topics" option and find a series of more unique stories. Once you find a story you enjoy reading and adding to, mark it in your favorites and return to add more chapters.
When adding to an interactive story, read the introduction and follow the story to where it asks for additions. Stay with the characters and plot introduced in that particular thread. Try to add at least a few paragraphs before giving more options. Think about what you want to add before you type it in. (You aren't able to edit, only the owner of the interactive can.) Where do you want this story thread to go? What options will you give at the end? Are you staying within the parameters that the story creator set? Also, good grammar and spelling is important or the story host may delete or edit your chapter.
As a writer, interactive stories can prod your muse into action, spurring you into writing again if the story appeals to you. Feel free to add to the interactive stories on this site; everyone likes to see new additions and creations. You can also add new chapters to your own interactive if they need a new burst of creativity. Activity in your Interactive keeps it listed at the top of the page in searches. If you wish to have a more exclusive story, you can create a group with only members of that group able to add to the interactive story.
Next time you're searching for something to do, or write, check out our Interactive Stories and add. They can be interesting and fun. |

Excerpt: It is a lazy, relaxing Saturday afternoon. You decide to take a hike. Maybe it will help to relieve the stress of everyday city life. Maybe it will help you to set aside your financial worries for a while. Certainly it will help you to escape the pressures and demands you face when surrounded by others - loved ones included.
You dress in comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. You travel light, taking nothing but a walking stick and a canteen of water.
And for once, you decide to take the path less-traveled.
Excerpt: You wake to find yourself in a strange town covered in a dense fog. Strange sounds fill the air. You catch a glimpse of some kind of strange creature shuffling by, but you're not exactly sure what it is.
There aren't any definite rules, as Silent Hill is a town that is different for each person who visits it. Those who find themselves there find themselves in a waking nightmare. You can fight off zombie nurses and other strange creatures.
What are you searching for? What guilty secret haunts you? How will you escape Silent Hill?

Excerpt: Eddie was tired, but in a really good mood. He had asked Karen Moore out last week, and this had been their first date. He was happy it had gone so well. He had picked her up at about six and they had gone into the neighboring town for italian food and then to a club. It was late now, and beginning to rain. Heavy wet droplets splashed down on the windshield and he flicked the wipers on casually. Pretty much everything Eddie did was casual. He was a really laid back guy. Karen on the other hand, was more high strung. She had a slightly nervous look about her, but it just made Eddie want to protect her. Karen was sweet rather than sexy, and Eddie liked that. he was used to dating cheerleader types, and it was nice to date a girl next door type. Not to say Karen wasn't pretty. She was just as pretty as the head cheerleader for their high school. But in a different way. A little more subduded. She had long auburn hair that seemed to glow with copper and bronze lights, and pale creamy skin that looked airbrushed. Eddie was thinking about all of this when the car began to sputter. It was a brand new camero and Eddie could only blink in surprise as it coasted to a stop. Karen looked at him questioninly. "Whats wrong?" she asked.
Excerpt: This is an airport where people can take a trip to fictional or real destinations, meet old friends or new, or escape on a new adventure.
And now, calling Flight 843, Flight 843 to Minneapolis....
Now boarding rows 24 to 19...
Sir...that bag is too large for a carry-on, we'll have to stow it below the aircraft...

Excerpt: One day, you and four of your friends are playing a role playing game in an old abandoned house that you have discovered out in the country.
A storm blows up and the five of you retreat to the basement to get away from the wind and rain blowing into the house. As you're moving down the stairs, your hair suddenly stands on end! A massive bolt of lightning hits the ground near the house and a soft blue glow of light can now be seen coming from the wall.
Still carrying your gaming papers, you move over to the wall and look at it closely. It looks like you're peering out an open window.

Excerpt: The eternal maze, so it has been called, and for many of those who have opened one of the three huge doors through which you will now start your journey, it has been an experience that lasted for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately some of those lives sometimes met an abrupt end rather soon.
You look at the three massive doors of stone - one leading to the west, one leading to the north, and one to the east.
The door you just entered through is suddenly locked behind you with a sharp clicking sound that makes you jump. You are trapped in the maze, and it is time to make your first choice.

This month's question: What do you read or participate in to spur your creativity?
Last month's question: What do you read to improve your writing?
Replies:
DRSmith : READ AND REVIEW right here.... Examining other stories can help you improve your editing skills, and spot errors in your own work..... a particularly good point I think needs a little miracle grow. Those asking for comments need to understand sometimes, that tho things may range from entire segments red-lined, or simple single word or phrases as "nit-picky" in appearance, are for the most part, mostly EDITS... we all go through... many times over in a single piece, and are there Mere FIXITS, and are not to detract from the overall talent in structure, presentment, pace, etc... some comments may be out of context, misplaced, make no sense, etc... and you have the ultimate say to accept or reject. But LISTEN. You'd be surprise how the selection of even a single word can have a magnanimous impact on the paragraph, perception of a character, event, etc.
Mavis Moog : Your advice to read, read and read some more is absolutely the best advice anyone can offer to a writer.
StephBee : Too true, Sweetie! I think one of the most important things you as a writer can do to improve your writing is to read as well. Two thumbs for a great, imformative newsletter.
GhostDragon : At the moment I'm not really reading anything to help improve my writing (even though it probably does anyway). At the moment I'm still looking for something that would really be a "page turner" for me...I think I may have found it...But I'm not to sure... |
