Dean Ray Koontz in an American writer who was born on July 9, 1945 in Everett, Pennsylvania. He's also known under various pseudonyms. Among them are Leigh Nichols, Aaron Wolfe, David Axton, Owen West, and Deanna Dwyer, to mention a few. Koontz is not only a novelist and short story writer, but a screenwriter as well. A list of some of his influences are Charles Dickens, Ray Bradbury, Stephen King, Walker Percy, and John D. MacDonald. It is not difficult to see why they inspired him.
He's best known for writing novels that are described as suspense thrillers, but also include elements of horror, mystery, science fiction, and satire. Several of his books are on the New York Times bestseller list.
Koontz grew up in poverty with an abusive father. He began writing at eight years old, and sold his work to family. A graduate of Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania (then known as Shippensburg State College), he converted to the Roman Catholic faith, and in November 1967 became an English teacher at Mechanicsburg High School. In his spare time he wrote his first novel, Star Quest. It was published in 1968, and he went on to write over a dozen more science fiction novels.
In the 1970's, Koontz began publishing suspense and horror fiction under his name and several pseudonyms. The pen names were used after several editors convinced him that authors who switched from genre to genre invariably fell victim to negativity. As of 2006, numerous of his pseudomous works are now available under his real name.
Just a few of his novels include "The Good Guy", "Mr. Murder", "intensity", "Watchers", "Hideaway", "Night Chills" and "The Darkest Evening of the Year".
