Polls
Polls are created by members who are seeking your opinion, so speak your mind and cast your vote! Writing.Com members question each other on a wide variety of topics.
Topics can be anything ranging from serious to silly, mundane to controversial. Polls are a great way to see what everyone else is thinking, their opinion on particular topics or questions.
A step-by-step guide to creating a Poll
Step 1:
Click on "Writing" at the very top of any WDC page, and then click on "User Poll" within the Writing: Interactive Section. (Or you can click on "Create an Item" within the Site Tools selection in the Site Navigation Tool at the left of the screen.)
Step 2:
Choose a topic. This may sound easy, but it can anything! Use your imagination!
Step 3:
Enter the title and brief description. Rate it according to its contents, and select genres and keywords (to make the item pop up when members browse genres or search for specific words).
Step 4:
Write your item body, which should include your question. Include any background information that may be necessary for viewers to make their decision. It's important to remain unbiased, however, so as not to influence voting.
Step 5:
Enter up to 9 choices for viewers to choose after reading the question. Each choice can only be up to 125 characters, so try to make your choices short and easy to understand. If necessary, further explain each choice in the item body.
A few things to keep in mind:
1. Keep your question short! Be concise and to the point with your intro and question. Don't bore your viewers, but also be sure to give enough information for them to answer your question.
2. Plenty of choices in answers! Be sure to have a good variety of choices in answers. It's a good idea to take suggestions from viewers, as well, perhaps including an option of "Other: Email your choice," so viewers can submit their own answers.
3. To "Other" or not to "Other. That is the question! In some cases, providing the viewer with the choice of "Other" will invariably lead to numerous votes in that direction. By not including the "Other" choice, you force your viewers to make a firmer decision. However, that move may also scare away voters who are really undecided. The choice is up to you.
4. Promote your poll! For maximum exposure, utilize the site's many tools of promotion, such as Sponsorship, Auto-Rewards, Billboards, Highlighted Items, "Activities @ Writing.Com" and more!
