Fill in Your Bio Block

When I read a story I always go to the port of the author to read the Bio. I want to know who the person is that wrote this great story. As I visit the ports of members though, a lot of them sit cold and empty, the door shut to visitors. It's not only newbies, older members have also left their Bio Blocks blank. I wonder why?

Bios are not unique to writing.com. Look on the back cover of any book out there and you'll see a Bio of the author.

When I first joined writing.com I didn't fill out my Bio right away either. There were just too many things to catch my attention. I was too busy learning how to navigate this very large site. Eventually I did though, and the port looks friendlier.

It's easy to do a short intro of yourself without violating any privacy issues you may have. You don't even have to admit to being a he/she. Just say a little about your writing, how long you've been writing, and maybe a bit on what you hope to accomplish. It makes visiting your port a little friendlier for your readers. You can change it every day if you wish to. It's a great way of welcoming your visitors with a smile.

Your BioBlock is the welcome mat you lay out for the visitors to your portfolio. Welcome your readers with a brief introduction about yourself, your writing or whatever your favorite things are.

How Do I?: Here's how.

Click "My Account".
Choose "Change Account Text & Special Items".
Read the details and rules regarding your BioBlock.
Fill in your information.
Click "Submit Changes".

If you'd like to check for mistakes and preview what your visitors will see, go to your portfolio and click on 'Show Public View'

Thanks for reading,

I view writing as a business. Being published requires an author to have that type of mindset.

Submitted Comment: Thank you Esprit for your wonderful words of wisdom in Don't Be A Showoff. I generally try to be short and concise in my writing but I do occassionally find myself trying to impress, not as much as I did in the past, but I still catch my ego trying to sneak itself in there from time to time. Thanks again for the timeless reminder about writing for your readers instead of yourself.

Thank you! I don't think you can keep it out, or even want to completely. You just have to use trickery to keep it in the background. For instance, give it a story of it's own and let him write to his heart's content. Then he'll be satisfied to stay out of the limelight in your work.

Submitted Comment: This really relates to me, I feel like I never have time, a full time uni student with 1 million exams around the corner. I promise myself after reading this, I must take some quiet time.

Thank you for the inspiration! X

I hope you do. Being still is good for the spirit, too.

So, you've been roaming around discussion forums again...
A really good and encouraging newsletter.
Inspiration comes and goes, you can't depend on it to always be there. Sometimes, you have to keep writing anyway. Deadlines must be met, enthusiastically or not. This is where your properly prepared outline or notes of ideas can carry you through these dry times.
>>good advice

Thank you, Larry!

Submitted Comment: I found this newsletter to be very informational, and often I find myself staring up at the sky. Up in the sky are the walking characters in my dreams, in my stories, and in my life. Often I find remembering the past while looking at the sky: I forget the stress strangling me day after day and all is gone. I agree that actually noticing the sky and the works of art hidden in it are, indeed, inspirational.

You speak through poetry, Katie, it shows your creative talent. Thank you!

Submitted Comment: Hey, this has been great. Still don't know my way around, but I'm getting there!

You will, Shroud, you will. Just keep exploring.

Submitted Comment: Even though I partially agree with some of the things you said partaining to writer's block, I don't completeley agree. For some of us, it's when we're at peace that we CAN'T write. When the stress is gone and everything is quiet, there are no thoughts there. I am one of the ones who writes best when my life is chaotic. You are right to say that alot of writer's block has to do with getting bored, but to alot of us - quiet non-chaotic times are boredom.

That's true. Each must find their own way to motivation.
