Finding Inspiration

Staring at a blank page can either be exciting or terrifying. I have many ideas for characters and stories running around in my head all day long, but sometimes, by the time I can actually sit down and write, the ideas have been wiped out by the stress of the day. At that point, the blank page is just another stress and instead of focusing on the potential story to be, I focus on the limited time I have to create.

Since staring at a blank page for hours is counter-productive, when it happens, I find a contest to enter. The contests on Writing.Com generally have prompts and a limited time frame. Both help me to focus on the creative potential instead of wallowing in the misery that is writers block. One contest that often sparks my creativity is "The Writer's CrampOpen in new Window.. A prompt is posted every twenty four hours, which ensures that I'm never without a new idea. I rarely enter the contest anymore, but I use the prompts often for writing exercises to get past the panic moment and into my writing zone so I can work on whatever I've scheduled for that night.

The next time you find your creativity stifled, look for a contest on "Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window.. If you have limited time, you can use the prompt as a quick writing exercise. Who knows, you might find that you like the prompt so much that a story or poem flows out and you're able to enter it into the contest after all.

Until Next Time,
Diane Author Icon
