Letter from the editor

Shouldn't you be working?

How much time do we waste checking our e-mail, facebook, blogs, etc. etc., etc? We sit down to write our 500 words, but first we need to check our messages real quick. Next thing we know, our writing time is gone. Bad.

I wasted several hours searching for programs to help keep us focused on our writing--it was fun, and I found some unsurprising things, but keeping focused is something we have to do on our own. Browsing is entertaining--whether you write 500 hundred words a day or not, is up to you.

*Check1* Google Chrome Browser

StayFocusd by Transfusion Media

StayFocusd increases your productivity by limiting the amount of time per day that you can spend browsing time-wasting websites. StayFocusd is an extension for Google Chrome Once your allotted time for the day has been used up, the sites you have blocked will be inaccessible for the rest of the day. The icon turns red and almost looks like a robotic eye watching you. That should guilt-trip anyone into closing the page.

RemindMe by majed.sahli

RemindMe allows you to setup reminders while browsing and sync them between computers.

Simply set reminders so you won't get carried away with browsing. Remind yourself of online stuff that you want to do later, job tasks that need to be done at a specific time, or just about anything that you would hate to miss.

Lazarus: Form Recovery by karl@interclue.com
Lazarus: Form Recovery for Chrome is very much in beta mode right now.
Firefox also has Lazarus.

Autosaves everything you type into textareas so you can easily recover from form-killing timeouts, crashes and network errors.

Ever had one of those "oh $*#@" moments when you've finally finished filling out a long form, and hit submit only to see an error message? And when you hit the back button, the form was blank... If so, you know you need Lazarus. And if not, you have a chance to install Lazarus before disaster strikes.

Read Later 0.2 by eLertGadget, Baris Derin

'Read Later' retrieves the details of the webpage and stores for future reading online and within the 'Read Later' desktop application. Simple, easy and uncomplicated.
I use Read Later and like it.

Glydo

Researching your book? This one might be helpful. Glydo automatically detects what you are interested in right now and suggests related web sites. It takes your search words and searches deeper for related material.

*Check5* IRIS

This is the only one on the list that isn't free, but it looks like the answer for a busy writer.
For those writers whose best ideas come while away from the keyboard, or they do their best writing with a pen and paper.

Iris now has a wireless ink pen for you. No need to lug the tablet PC to school or the park any longer, just bring your pen and paper. Artists can draw their masterpieces or illustrations in front of the PC and watch them appear on the screen--now or later. The pen holds 70 pages of text or drawings before you have to download. It can be left in your own handwriting or converted to typed text. No more excuses or lost notes. Oh--you can refill the ink with standard refills.

The price isn't bad for serious writers and doodlers. Search Iris pen.

Writing your 500 words first might give you more time for browsing and chatting without the guilt. Now wouldn't that be pleasant for a change? *Smile*

Thanks for reading,

Comment: I love the variety and talent presented here, but I wish I could get more feedback/reviews/critiques. I offer gift points and I have given reviews and I have posted on the request review page.

Have you submitted your work to any of the newsletters, Jenny? Most will post the submissions. I've included your book this month in the Editor's picks, I hope it gets you some reads. The description really sounds intriguing,

Comment: I can't believe it!!! It has been quite a while since I have read one of your Newbie Newsletters. God bless you, dear Lady. You have come along way in the past several years. You are a guiding angel to so many of us here, Newbies, as well as old timers. And we all thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Hello, God Son. Thank you.

Comment: True I never read directions and then I wonder why I struggle to find something. LOL Yes just don't do what I do! I've been here 3 years now and still love this community.

Comment: Another great newsletter! I am no longer considered a newbie, but find I still learn from the tips in all the WDC Newsletters.

What caused me the most frustration when I was a brand new member was learning to navigate the site. I find I am still learning even today. The newsletters were a great help with this. As I met new friends on WDC they answered my questions and asked me questions as well. We learned together. The groups I became associated with were a HUGE help. WDC also offers classes through New Horizons that aide tremendously with navigating the site, writing courses for stories, novels, poetry, reviewing and MLWriting.

Just have to plug the "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. group which was formed after I joined WDC for their excellent assistance to Newbies in learning the ropes on this wonderful website.

Sandy

Thanks for answering last month's question, Sandy! It seems navigation is still the big issue, but it can be fun to explore as long as we keep our patience.

Esprit. I did read the newsletter this time and it's chock full of stuff I'll be using and have already used.
The item I include this time is the Updated tally for the goal I am working on. In day 13 of a goal to help Open Door to Grace, and by the time you read this I will be finished, but the GPs I receive from the reviews I do of your choices will benefit this group. Now that's a great reason to write a newsletter. You never know what impact there is going to be in the community. I thank you again and have a blessed weekend here in the WDC and out there in the real world.
Copenator out!

Thank you, Copenator, I appreciate it. In your honor, the Editor's Picks this month were picked because they specifically asked for reviews. They're all yours! *Smile*

Comment: Hi- I have noticed that you include a lot of short stories as items- how about a bit more poetry?
Here is my last poem in case you find it appropriate and would like to add it to the next newsletter. "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window.

Well, Sam, I'm not a poet so I don't look for them as often, but other newsletters carry them too. Do you take the Poetry Newsletter? I followed your suggestion and included a few this time--thank you! I also included your item in the Submitted Links. I hope you get lots of reads.
*Smile*

We always appreciate your comments and suggestions--thanks!
