Letter from the editor

You know that conversation you have where someone introduces you as the "funniest person I know?" And then the phrase, "quick, say something funny!" somehow gets spoken. This is where crickets start chirping as you scramble in your brain with the pressure of trying to please an audience, all without a stand up routine already written.

Sometimes life can be like that, too. But instead of a physical audience, you find your target is a mere piece of paper. And, oh, how judging that mere piece of paper can be! It stares at you, blankly, waiting for the punch line, which you've scribbled over ten or twenty times because nothing seems to make it laugh. So what do you do when you want so badly to be funny, but find that the laughs never come?

*Star* Stop trying! You know, not everything has to be hilariously funny. Sometimes, we're our own worst enemies in the writing process! Take a break, walk away, don't try for a while.

*Star* Read someone else's work. Sometimes inspiration hits when you're involved in someone else's work. Sometimes relaxing your brain and letting it process through a whole story can help you get through your's, too!

*Star* Pull inspiration from your life. Do you have a kid that says the cutest things? I know I could write a novel about the funny things my kids do and say if I had the time. I could also write another novel on the silly and stupid things my husband does! In fact, that could probably make a whole series of novels!

*Star* Write a list. Think out funny situations in your head. Nothing that's full-length story material, mind you. Just a short sentence about a funny incident: A cat is walking along a fence, gets spooked, and falls off. Or any other situation that might make you laugh if you experienced it, feasible or not.

*Star* Most of all, relax! You don't have to be funny all of the time. There's just no way! What you can do is chill out and not take comedy so seriously. When you pressure yourself, sometimes you find you can't perform.

So there you have it. Take some time to relax this Thanksgiving break, kick back, watch your family eat turkey (or tofurkey, if that's your kind of thing), spend some time watching football or whatever it is your family does for tradition, and draw inspiration from all of them. Then go home and try to write. Or not. It's up to you!
