Letter from the editor

Hi!

Glancing at the posts in "Noticing NewbiesOpen in new Window., I notice folks who are shy about posting items or getting reviews because they are non-native speakers of English.

My response to that is - Hey! Don't worry about it!

Write. Write.

Let the thoughts, the feelings, the insights flow. That's what's important. You need to communicate what's deep down inside you, to bring it out on the paper or the computer screen. You need to get hold of that fleeting idea or nurture that seed of thought, not let those go because you were nervous about the exact words or idioms to use.

You need to share these thoughts, feelings, expressions, anecdotes, insights with the world - not keep them bottled up inside or deny them to the audience on Writing Dot Com because you were nervous about the reaction of native speakers.

Refinements to grammar or spelling can come later.

How?

It happens when you get involved with reviewing. You review others, hopefully they review you back.

On Writing Dot Com, reviewers will tell you if something you've written doesn't quite come through. You could put in a request on "Please ReviewOpen in new Window., with a note of the areas you're most concerned about. Review other writers who have requested reviews, and chances are they'll review you back.

Language is, after all, the vehicle or the tool. There's the gift, and there's the wrapping paper and ribbon. Don't lose sight of the fact that the gift is more important than the wrapping paper or ribbon. Talent lies within, the urge to write and share can be irresistible. The vehicle can be tuned up, the tool can be honed, the wrapping paper and ribbon only help us reach the truth within.

Don't deny the gifts because you thought you didn't have appropriate wrapping paper! You're denying yourself, other writers and the world something important, by suppressing what you have to say!

WRITE ON!
- Sonali

PS I came across this great post on Writing Dot Com's Facebook page!

Darlene Pharris: It does not matter what you share, it is the courage to share that is important. So don't hold back, write it, post it, and let the world know who you really are.

Thanks, Darlene!

Ask & Answer

Thank you for writing in to "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (May 19, 2010)Open in new Window.

Sonali, a great and colorful NL you cooked up for us. I love your creative way of listing all the applications our handles can have. I do agree with Sticktalker Author Icon that the changing of handles beyond recognition is confusing. I do try to conserve my handle even when I add a message. Sometimes I have to shorten it, so right now the handle says: "Giselle thanks WdC friends," because "Giselle d'Octobre thanks WdC friends" wouldn't have fit. Being able to use the handles, and the images in the cases - if we subscribe to that service - to show our mood is a great instant message to all those we know. I love it and I hope it stays like that forever.

Thanks NaNoNette Author IconMail Icon

Great newsletter, Sonali. It's great the way you explained the rating system for those who are not familiar with it, along with why members change their handles.

Thanks SHERRI GIBSON Author IconMail Icon

Sonali,
I go along with Sticktalker and think more people should leave their handles as is, but also keep them simple for old people, who like myself, can remember them. The article was very interesting about handles as I never paid a lot of attention to them. It was a learning experence reading the article. THANKS Grampa Ed

Fun newsletter! This is the first one I've read on this topic, and I had a great time following your lead as you explored the many creative ways members use their WDC handles.
