Letter from the editor

With the New Year around the corner, let's talk motivation. Not your motivation, but your characters' motivations. Provides a logical explanation for illogical acts while allowing your characters to "grow and change", Illustrating, even subtly, what inspires and provokes your characters creates a grand stage where your characters can perform. generates interest and a sense of anticipation for your readers, and promotes creative freedom for you, the author.

Once you've determined your protagonist is shy, a pacifist, who's bound by the family code to capture the legendary secret Meade recipe stolen from the family by arch competitive enemies, then it's easy to see why he might choose experience several failed attempts on his way to be more aggressive and cunning when he must sneak into the Meade brewery of the enemies. Or, Knowing the heroine wants to study at ballet at Julliard will explain why she consistently turns down dates from the captain of the football team at school.

Readers don't want to be left in the dark about everything. They don't mind waiting, reading hundreds of pages to reach the climax; but, they want to know why the antagonist is afraid of spiders but wears snakes around his neck to scare his underlings.

Furthermore, when you are aware of everything motivating your characters, you're able to give your readers a complex storyline plenty overflowing with rich, relevant action adventure.
