Letter from the editor

Where is the best place to find a story idea? I do not think there is a best place, because the ideas are all around. Pick up a newspaper, read the headlines, ask "What if..." and write a story. Turn on television, watch a documentary on the History Channel or Animal Planet, ask "What if..." and write a story that answers that question.

An author can look at the events in her or his own life and find story or plot ideas. Everyone has strange, unusual, or weird things happen in our lives that cause them to ask the questions "Why" or "What is going on". When these things happen, the author needs to sit down, describe the event, and then answer one or both of those questions.

Here is an example from my own life. I was asleep and heard the doorbell ring three times. I got out of bed and went to the front door. I looked out the peephole and saw no one standing on the porch. Since I have a locked security screen door, I opened the front door and looked out, but could not see anyone in the front yard. I went into the living room and looked at the clock it was about 11:55 PM. Thirty and sixty days later the same thing happened at approximately the same time.

What was going on? Why did someone ring my doorbell and leave? I do not believe it was a dream, but I still do not know why or who rang the bell. I do need to know because as a writer, I can answer that question from either a fantasy or science fiction scenario.

Excrept: The clanging of pots and pans could be heard throughout the cottage. The sun had not even fully risen yet, and Mother was already searching for her missing spoon. Liam sighed and rolled himself out of bed. This rude awakening has happened every morning for the last two weeks. Liam knew what was causing the ruckus and also knew that he would be called upon to attempt the reclaiming of Mother's spoon, if he wanted breakfast.

Fiona Hassan Author Icon writes: I never imagined, before, any different mythological explanation of the seasons other than the Greco-Roman stories, but I did think up a myth about fire and wind personified that probably would lead to a whole new mythology if I let it blossom. Thanks for reminding me about it :)
