I'm In Over My Head!

WDC can be a really exciting community to belong to. And if you join a lot of activities and groups, you can make a ton of friends and have a large network. But what happens when you overextend yourself? Suddenly you find yourself committed to a dozen reviews and judging a contest by the end of the week and you just don't have the time. Or you host a contest and find yourself short on gift points and no time to judge the entries. What do you do? Do you ignore the site and contest and skip logging in for a while? Do you make up an elaborate story about a personal crisis? Do you sprinkle excuses like croutons on a salad? Some do.

What should you do? If you find yourself overextended, ask for help! Most members on this site understand that the internet takes second place to events in "real life". A person certainly doesn't want to get fired from their job because they fell asleep at their desk because they tried to finish reviews in the wee hours of the morning. This is where having a network of friends on WDC can be useful. Perhaps you can ask someone to help finish the reviews, leaving you to read them and choose a winner.

Came up short on gift point prizes? One piece of advice - don't promise gift points you don't have. But if for some reason you miscalculated, or more people entered than you imagined (yay!) you can always pick up more gift points in the "The Writing.Com ShopOpen in new Window.. Or if you can't purchase more, try reviewing some items on Auto-Reward, they can be found in the left navigation panel > Things To & Read > Auto-Reward Items. These generous members offer gift points when you send them a comprehensive review. On top of that, if you haven't reviewed the member before, you'll get gift points from the "The Review MixerOpen in new Window. and at the end of the day - "Daily Review RewardsOpen in new Window. Don't send a fluff review to these people - do a comprehensive critique and you'll have another review friend to network with.

The most important message is - don't leave people wondering. Ask for help, or more time. But let everyone know what is going on. You don't need to explain your personal reasons, just apologize and give members a time or date that you know you can meet. There's nothing more disappointing than entering an activity / contest and it dies without a note from the host. While it's a bit crazy to extend an Easter activity to July, at least everyone involved would know what is going on.

To be successful, communicate and be reliable.

This month's question: How do you enlist help or earn gift points for your contest / activity? Send in your answer below! *Down* Editors love feedback!

One of the advantages of living in the Paper Doll Gang Blog City is to have others visit your building (blog) and leave you a comment. If you wish others to visit your building (blog) and comment, then be sure to visit other people's buildings/blogs, too. Remember -- you must behave as a good neighbor and others will treat you as a good neighbor.

To enter this contest, you will have to select a poem you liked best in WdC. Then you will write a poem on the same subject as the selected poem. Yet, your treatment of the subject is expected to be totally different. You may look at it from a different point of view, or you may use a different form of poetry, or a different genre altogether!

Spink has returned! This is a good thing! Mainly because the few people who have continued to visit in my absence have seen fit to completely trash the joint!

Ask & Answer

This month's question: How do you enlist help or earn gift points for your contest / activity?

Last month's question: What do you think is the most important point to making a contest / activity successful?

Replies:
nishia: Successful contests? We have a lot of them. I think having a good 'home page' for your contest with accurate, regularly updated information is important. The other thing - keeping to your deadlines. People who enter contests have to have the items finished by a certain date, so making sure you review items and award prizes timeously is really important. Just as a side-note: I want to thank all contest administrators on this site. It's hard work and I believe we have great contests and activities on Writing.com. Thank you!

Steve adding writing to ntbk. Author Icon: Most important step in making an activity successful is exposure. You have to take advantage of all methods here in the WdC to get things out there.
Bid Click is one that when done by category is not as costly as some of the other options.
Thanks for highlighting these items. I was only able to find one I liked this time but will continue reading and finding things I would not have known existed were it not for your newsletter.
