New Environments
I went to the Adventure Aquarium this week. While they were difficult to photograph, I found a lot of the environments very intriguing. One had the purpose of demonstrating schools of fish. Somehow hundreds of fish all change direction at the same time without audible communication. Could humans achieve that? It would have to be something more definitive than hand signals like a SWAT team uses.
Another had jellyfish in it. It was amazing to watch those boneless creatures propel themselves in the current. Their only thought is capture food for sustenance. What if such a creature invaded our planet? Something moving through our world, glopping up living creatures without reason, could it happen?
The shark tank was fascinating to watch. I love how the sharks glide around the tank and over the clear tube we could walk through. Some had fierce looking teeth and I could see how they earn their inaccurate reputation of being harmful. It was a bit chilling to have the sharks look you right in the eye through the glass, as if they were trying to tell me something. Or decide if I was edible. Apparently not. And as a small factoid to make you feel better about swimming in the ocean, the percentage of an unprovoked shark attack worldwide is less than 1 a year. I'm afraid I would find the one shark having a bad day.
It's possible to find inspiration even in an environment you might not dwell in. I enjoyed watching all the creatures of the sea and letting my imagination run with the random thoughts that popped into my mind. When looking for inspiration, let your imagination answer the question, "What if?"
This month's question: "What kinds of environments inspire you?"

Excerpt: All manner of fishing boats cast off from Muanaroa Island in the early mornings, while it is still dark and the water is calm. As the sun peeks over the horizon, bands of yellow mix with the deep blues of the water, sky and clouds. The elements combine to create a place of tranquility, where there is little sound other than the seagulls, and the wakes of the boats. There is time to think, and all who have been there would not trade it for the world.
Excerpt: Below an amorphous mass of fish swarm – light reflecting of the metallic silver of their iridescent scales in a dazzling rainbow spectrum.

Excerpt: One eye opens and I’m facing the clock. I’d set the alarm for five thirty but I was so excited, I’d been waking up with one eye every hour since two. The comforter was snug up against my neck and it was warm and cozy. Of all the mornings for everything to be warm and cozy, why did it have to be this one? I had an appointment to hunt for Ol’ Blue!

Excerpt: Camping was supposed to be fun. But first thing, the ants took over their grub. Fire ants. He and Malcolm tried to fight them off, but the darn things stung without any regard to property rights.

Excerpt: “Cameron McHale, I swear if you go out that door, you’re not coming back through it tonight!” Bridget glared at her husband, her plump hands bunched into fists at her hips, and her ample chest heaving with anger.
“Get out of the way, Bridget. I’m going whether you like it or not.” His voice was calm but the burr of his Scottish accent lent a touch of danger to his proclamation.

Excerpt: “Go on Tadila; pick whichever one you would like.” My father’s soft voice was audible above the surrounding exuberance of the State Fair. She stared as though in a trance at her potential choices. Finally with conviction she replied, “I want the Goldfish!” My father exchanged an uneasy look with my mother, as I rushed to watch the towering man in the booth try to catch the fleeing goldfish.
Excerpt: Harry held the rainbow trout high in the air; The hook still sunk deep in its mouth. He wiped the long strands of hair from his face and smiled.
“Dude, take my picture!”
Excerpt: “Joe? Who’s that sitting at the dining room table?”
“That’s Al Linder Hon.”
“Al Linder? Who’s he.”
“Al is a famous Michigan bass and walleye fisherman… at least he used to be.”

This month's question: What kinds of environments inspire you?
Last month's question: What pinnacle would you like to reach?
Soulhaven says: Personally, and within the writing realm, I think the bottom of Mount Everest (bearing in mind all the preparation that has to come first!) would be to be able to say "I am an author". To have several items published. To be in the top 100 best sellers would be worthy of flag-raising.
BIG BAD WOLF is Howling replies: The pinnacle I want to reach is the one where I get published.
