When we hear the word "romance" we think of two people meeting, becoming aware of an attraction between them, and then they must overcome conflict before deciding to commit to each other.
Romance is a genre that is dynamic and changing. Novels have grown since their "bodice-ripping" adolescence. Heroines are stronger, embodying inner strength and courage. Heroes can still be "alpha" males, but now they are joined by "beta" and "omega" males. One aspect of romance stories that hasn't changed? Their hopeful, upbeat endings.
That's why I enjoy writing and reading romance. The ending is very satisfying – love embraces hope and who doesn't like reading about a happy ending?
Romance is a specific genre fiction and if you write romance, you should take it seriously. The "heartbeat" of the story involves a man and a woman and how they go about falling in love. The ending should have the couple making some type of commitment to each other.

Feedback from my 13 DEC 2011 Newsletter: I asked: Can you recall a gesture that has special meaning around the holidays?
Fyn-elf
The 1st time around when my now hubby and I were dating, I got him an ornament, a blown glass version of the USS Constitution. Shortly after that Christmas we parted ways due to small children and logistics. Fast forward 20 years and we met up again...and stuck! The 1st Christmas back together we began to decorated the tree and he hung his traditional 'first' ornament, and then asked if I knew what had been 2nd all these years. The next ornament he pulled out of the special box was that blown glass one I'd given him way back when. He'd hung it on the tree all those years in-between! Blew me away, and I immediately went and got one of his presents. Another version of a blown glass Constitution! We laughed...and ever since they are the 2nd and 3rd ornaments on the tree after his 50 year old Drummer boy him Mom made the 1st year he started playing the drums. Such a special, loving moment we enact every Christmas!
SantaBee is a 911 Dispatcher for LAPD. Her latest release is a paranormal romance called "Twilight Over Moldavia." Would you fall in love with a man cursed to become a werewolf? If you peek into her port here on WDC, you just might find an early draft of the novel. |
