Free Promotion

Promotion can be the key to attracting participants to a contest or activity. While things like Auto-Rewards and Sponsoring Items can work great, there are a lot of ways to promote an activity without using gift points.

*Idea* Signature - Add a link to your contest/activity in your signature, so that your message posts will help with promotion.

*Idea* "Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. - The perfect place to advertise to people looking for open contests!

*Idea* Billboard & Handle - In your account options (under "Personal Display Options"), your billboard is shown with your name on the Who's Online page. (This option is for Preferred Authors and above) Here you can also change your handle to advertise for your contest.

*Idea* Highlighted Items - When you click on your portfolio, you'll notice a link in the upper right corner, just above your bioblock, that says, "Manage Your BioBlock and Highlighted Items." Here you can change your the items which are highlighted by being listed just above your portfolio items. Here they're guaranteed to be seen first by visitors to your portfolio.

*Idea* Reviewing - Add a link to your contest to your reviewing signature. Make sure that the emphasis is on reviewing the user's item, but you can also suggest they take a look at your contest/activity. For instance, I used to host a free-verse poetry contest. If I came across any free-verse poetry, I would give a detailed review and at the end, add the line, "I host a contest for free-verse poetry, and I think your work would be a perfect fit!" Make sure the majority of your review is a constructive review, not just about your own item. Be careful not to abuse the Reviewing System!

*Idea* Contests & Activities Newsletter - Submit to this newsletter by using the submission form at the bottom of this newsletter!

Of course, there are lots of options for promotion if you have some gift points. If you're looking to purchase some, there's a sale on gift points going on right now! Check it out *Right* "The Writing.Com ShopOpen in new Window.

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (January 25, 2012)Open in new Window.), discussed what makes a contest attract participants.

Thanks for noticing the "Five For Fighting" contest. I have all of the entries, and they have all been interesting stories.

I agree that the more specific you can be when outlining the rules, the more pleasant the contest "atmosphere" usually is, and, of course, communication is always the key throughout the event.

Thanks again for this and for the newsletter. It is always worth a read!
